As reported on Huffington Post earlier this week, it seems CBS has snatched up the rights to the new show, Extant, by Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin. Yes, you just read that correctly. CBS is working on a science fiction show with Spielberg. We know just because something has the Spielberg name, that doesn’t mean it will be good by default, but that does mean something. It means we will definitely give it a shot.
Details are scarce, but Extant will focus on a female astronaut who looks to reconnect with her family after a year spent in space. The kicker here is that some world-changing stuff happened while she was floating around the cosmos, and coming the grips with that, and trying to fit back in with her family, will be the focus of the show. And did I already mention, Spielberg is involved?
I know some could say Spielberg has dropped off a bit (Indiana Jones part 4, anyone?) but what about Lincoln this past Summer? That showed that Spielberg still has it, whatever IT is, and no matter what screen he chooses to bring his vision, be it big screen or small, we will tune in and see what it is about. Also, let us not forget E.T and Close Encounters. Honestly, no one does space better than Spielberg, so we are DEFINITELY intrigued about Extant, which CBS ordered 13 episodes of, set to premiere in Summer of 2014. More details as they emerge.
