In a sad bit of news today, it has been announced that cable channel Comedy Central has decided not to renew the comedy show Reno 911! This was announced by Reno 911! star Thomas Lennon via Twitter, stating "Reno 911! was cancelled at 1:30 pm today. Won't be wearing the shorts again." (Lennon's character Jim Dangle was infamous for his thigh-high short shorts.)

The show, which ran for six seasons, is a parody of Cops and other reality shows, though the offers depicted in Reno are bumbling, incompetent fools who often become the victims of the criminals they are trying to subdue. The show, which featured many guest stars (including Paul Rudd, Patton Oswalt, Rainn Wilson, and Seth Green), also spawned a feature film, entitled Reno 911: Miami.

The show featured a cast change-up in its sixth season, bringing in two new officers in exchange for three officers killed in the fifth season finale. This may have contributed to the cancellation.

However, regardless of what caused the show to end, it will be sorely missed as a continual source of awkward humor, and as one of the best mockumentary series around. It will live on in syndication on Comedy Central, I'm sure, and DVDs of all six seasons are available.

  1. This makes me sad. I only recently found out about how great Reno 911 is thanks to my roommate DVRing most of the most recent (and last, apparently) season.

But, like you said, it's not like syndication and DVDs don't exist. At least we got as much of it as we did. It's not like Firefly or Carnivale where the audience is left hanging because the series' potential never had the opportunity to be reached.
