Today the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour came to an end and the very first panel this morning was for a show that could be the funniest thing you have seen in years.
Modern Family is a new half hour sitcom airing at 9/8c in ABC’s new Wednesday comedy block starting September 23rd. The show revolves around three families each with a different structure. First there is Phil and Claire, a traditional American family with three kids, and then there is Mitchell and Cameron, a gay couple who just adopted a baby from Vietnam, and Jay and Gloria. Jay is an older man who is married to a very much younger woman who has a rebellious little boy.
I have seen the pilot now 8 times and I have to say every single time I watch it I laugh just as hard, smile just as much, and love it even more. Comedy has been dwindling in the past years with only few comedies such as “The Big Bang Theory” and “30 Rock” succeeding as new sitcoms in the last three years. Now ABC is hoping and I think succeeding in taking a risk on an all-new night. Wednesday’s starts of with Hank, starring Kelsey Grammer as a CEO who gets laid off, which may not be the best example of comedy, but then the night is strong with Patricia Heaton’s Malcolm in the Middle like scenario from the mom’s point of view The Middle, and after Modern Family comes Courtney Cox’s fronted vehicle Cougar Town, which is a hilarious take on the life of a 40-something single mom trying to get stay hip and happy today.
The critics at the Press Tour welcomed Modern Family with open arms and often praised is as” the best new comedy next season”, said Jace of Televisionaryblog.com. I hope you give this a chance and maybe comedy will return to our airwaves more prominently. I know I sure hope so!
