Comic-Con - Summit Entertainment's Red Panel

Summit Entertainment, purveyors of a little film series called Twilight, brought not that vampire movie to Comic-Con, but rather RED. This movie stars a cavalcade of stars including: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, Karl Urban, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, and centers on a group of former CIA agents deemed Retired: Extremely Dangerous, or RED.

The panel opened with a very fun teaser trailer. Then, the creators were brought out: Warren Ellis (the writer of the original graphic novel), producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, co-stars Karl Urban and Mary-Louise Parker (of Showtime's Weeds), and stars Helen Mirren and Bruce Willis. The panel spoke about how this movie offered them a number of opportunities to do things they've never done before. Helen Mirren said she has never taken a role like this one, which required her to shoot guns and fist fight. Karl Urbanwas excited to have the opportunity to pick up one of the greatest action heroes ever and throw him across the room. Mary-Louise Parker had a chance to perform a different kind of "funny"... and get dragged around a lot by Bruce Willis. For his part, Bruce Willis said that although most people think RED is ann action film, he always thought he was making a romantic comedy. A world premiere trailer was shown before a Q&A session, the hilight of which was Mary-Louise Parker relating some advice from Alec Baldwin: if you need to look scared, pretend you have to pee.

In sum, RED looks like it is going to be one heck of a trip. There are some amazing actors up on the screen together, and I think the freshness of what they are being asked to do is really going to be quite the cinematic delight. RED opens October 15, 2010.
