For the small (and we mean very small) group of fans who loved this show, it is a sad day, as it seems that ABC has canceled Defying Gravity without airing all of it's planned (and filmed) thirteen episodes. While no official announcement has come from ABC yet, the decision was made clear during the September 13 broadcast where ABC announced it as being the Season Finale and didn't show any previews for the next episode at the end.
The move doesn't come entirely as a surprise. A few weeks ago Canada's CTV moved the show from Sunday night to Friday nights. It was obvious from the ratings that ABC would need to make similar adjustments, but their resolution wouldn't be so easy. The reruns ABC was showing on Friday were already beating what Defying Gravity had been producing and Saturdays weren't an option due to the return of college football.
Last week ABC removed the series from the schedule listing, prompting many to assume the show had been canceled, but when no word came from ABC, there seemed to be a little bit of hope still. But that has faded after last night's episode left the crew six days before they arrived at Venus, the first destination of their six year mission to explore the solar system.
Since no official announcement has come from ABC, it's still unclear what they will put in Gravity's place on Sunday nights, but they shouldn't have to fill the spot for long. Brothers & Sisters returns to the timeslot on September 27, and it's possible that they will either play Brothers & Sisters reruns during the weeks in October when Defying Gravity was set to air their last episodes, or perhaps they'll even shift the Brothers & Sisters lineup some and give us new episodes during that time.
As for the future of Defying Gravity in Canada, it's fate is still unknown. But if you live in the U.S., you're going to have to wait for the DVD set before you learn the real ended to the first season of the show. ABC originally purchased 13 episodes of the series, and at the time all 13 episodes had already been filmed, however its unclear how many episodes would end up on a DVD, or for that matter if a DVD would ever even come out. Keep your fingers crossed!

UPDATED: An ABC Publicist for Defying Gravity has released a statement saying that the show hasn't been canceled and that the remain 5 episodes will be shown. However, no details on when that will happen have been provided. For the full story, read 'Defying Gravity' Not Actually Canceled Yet According to ABC
this totally bums me out, but didn't surprise me based on what you all have been reporting. I was actually really enjoying this show. I'd been hooked from the very beginning. I will be buying the DVD when it comes out, but I wish that they'd stuck with it longer. Guess we'll never find out what Beta was! :(
Any chance we can send something to ABC to reverse the decision? Probably not :(
Normally Melissa, I'd say that starting up come kind of Save Defying Gravity campaign couldn't hurt, but in this case the numbers have been so bad, and the show hasn't been doing any better with DVR or Online viewing, so its tough to find an angle that would actually convince ABC (or any network) to reverse this. In addition, we're entering the fall season where the broadcast networks expect, and require financially, A LOT higher ratings. I guess moving forward, we need to start these "Save [x-show]" campaigns as soon as a series starts!! :)

I was enjoying the show, it would be great if they could air the remaining episodes online. After all, they have already been filmed!

It's a shame. I think there was lousy PR. I had never heard of the show and a couple of weeks ago I ran across it accidently while looking at the shows on abc. I started watching and got hooked. Although, I hoped that it was not another "Lost" that kept you guessing season after season on what was really going on and I finally got frustrated and gave up watching it. I think people just did not know about it and it just never found it's audience.

Maybe ABC should blame themselves. I had no idea this show existed until episode 5. Now im hooked and just like "Vanished", "Jericho", and many others we are left with reality tv crap and no good television.
Thank God for shows like Battlestar Galactica and Heroes which somehow find ways to survive.

Of *course* ABC canceled the show: it never intended Defying Gravity to be a keeper, just a placeholder until the autumn schedule began. Proof? No promotion for this show whatsoever, not on ABC, and not on other networks where it would have made sense — like SciFi (whoops! really hate that stupid new spelling …), USA network, TNT, FX, Spike, Discovery channel, Discovery Science, BBC America, PBS or HBO (there probably would be a significant number of crossover viewers, for instance, if ads for Defying Gravity had run before and after episodes of True Blood, and that's only one example; I know this becaue I myself switched from True Blood to Defying Gravity every Sunday night. Similarly, there's probably a potential viewership among fans of PBS's Nova, Nova Science Now, and Masterpiece, or among fans of sci-fi films on FX; but ABC is so closed minded that it didn't even think to advertise Defying Gravity on a network as obvious as SciFi, um, SyFy. Now, how blind do you have to be to miss THAT? Or how determined for Defying Gravity to fail …?).
The truth of the matter is that ABC had this series pegged wrong from the start, probably intentionally so (Gray's Anatomy in space??! Oh, please. What network nitwit thought of *that* kiss of death?? Like anyone interested in either the space program or speculative fiction would give a damn about Gray's Anatomy — NOT). ABC didn't make an ounce of effort to promote it, they were hoping not to have to support this show into the fall or winter replacement seasons because the show isn't cheap to make, what with all the F/X and expensive sets, and they're relieved that they can now justify the decision to cancel because they deliberately created a self-fulfilling prophecy here. Besides, their programmers are stupid enough to think they can only afford to have one 'sci-fi' show on ABC, and they've already put all their markers on FlashForward — after first removing as many vestiges of real science fiction as they could. Mark my words: FlashForward will be a real disappointment to anyone expecting genuine science fiction or even mildly interesting speculative fiction and may not even provide a sufficient fix to Lost fans (may they all drown in their self-indulgent fixations). The dead giveaway here is that ABC doesn't even intend to show the last three episodes of this season, despite the fact that they don't have anything elose ready to go before the new season starts.
As for reruns of existing shows doing better than DG, well DUH — people already know what *those* shows are about, and their fans are already invested in watching reruns until the new episodes are broadcast. So that's not convincing proof of anything regarding DG.
Meanwhile, Canadian TV will have to do a much better job of promoting Defying Gravity to its viewers and scheduling it next to programming that attracts a more compatible viewership. But there is also opportunity here for a US cable network to pick up Defying Gravity, properly promote it, and run with a sleeper hit: not unlike the X Files, this show has the potential to grow a devoted audience — but it needs visibility and sensible positioning in the viewing schedule for that to happen. There's a reason the reinvented Battlestar Galactica wasn't shown on broadcast TV: those tubers-for-brains never had the imagination or willingness to let it be the hit that it became — and it became a hit by being good drama first. Defying Gravity is also good drama (TNT, anyone?), but it needs a genuine chance to become one — not the programmed-for-death treatment it received at the hands abominable ABC.
My advice: Some cable network should snap up Defying Gravity for a good sale price, then promote the hell out of it on the abovementioned networks AND show it on a week night when the broadcast schedule is weak — like Wednesdays — and surround DG on its schedule with compatible programming. Most important: DON'T schedule DG on a weekend or opposite shows like and including Heroes, Smallville, the Vampire Diaries, Nova, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Dollhouse, Fringe, Stargate Universe or FlashForward but **DO** advertise during those shows on those networks, among others. Do that, and you'll have a hit on your hands before you're halfway through season 2. Believe it.
Um, actually webdiva, other networks don't allow advertising like that. ABC owns Disney and ESPN, but SyFy is owned by NBC Universal, as an example, and would never allow ABC to advertise one of their shows and possibly pull viewers away from their channel. Sometimes there's crossover between NBC and Syfy because they have the same parent company but otherwise advertising on other networks isn't a possibility.
I definitely agree that they marketed the show wrong. But that's becoming more and more typical in television with Sci-fi and genre shows. The big networks don't seem to know how to get people to relate to them.

For all fans of "Defying Gravity", it looks like CTV (Canadian Television) will still be airing 3 more episodes this season… and lucky for us, these can be viewed on their website the day after they air (September 18, 25, and TBA)!
" lucky for us, these can be viewed on their website the day after they air"
not true since they block users outside of the Canada, sorry. :(

I think is disgusting the way that the network is treating its viewers. They have the last three episodes but we are not allowed to see them. Screw them.
Also makes me weep for humanity that great shows like this get buried and then cancelled while vomit like "Dance your ass off" and "Big Brother" get multiple seasons. Really shows the average intelligence of our society.
Yep, trueNow-a-days every thing is just about American Idol and Survivor.
Sucks.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that CTV/SPACE will air the rest of the series, because the way it ended last night- terrible. How is it that "reality" tv shows can take up space in every time slot every night of the week, and good, compelling, well thought out shows end up tanking? And I agree with WebDiva- I saw one promo touting Defying Gravity as a new Grey's…and immediately decided not to watch it. I am glad my curiosity got the best of me. :)

For once those broadcast laws work in my favour! (I can never see any shows online ie Lost, Fringe, etc up here)

Just was over at the abc.com site. The messageboards there are drawing a few folks who are hoping that ABC will stick with this show.
Apparently ABC has issued a statement saying that they have not cancelled DG, but are looking for a place in their schedule to air it. Bullocks. But, perhaps they underestimated the number of folks who found this show (with no help from ABC) and would like to continue to watch it.
Maybe?
You lucky Canadians.
Ya, I know, wishful thinking. I just hope we get a DVD with loads of extras. :)
Dang Melissa, you're fast! ;) I just published this new article a few minutes after you posted your comment. Seems like it might be a good time for a Save Defying Gravity campaign! :)

[...] ‘Defying Gravity’ Has Been Canceled After 8 Episodes then ‘Defying Gravity’ Not Actually Canceled Yet According to ABC [...]
Man I am so damn sick of this crap from "All" the standard television channels. NBC,ABC,& CBS… They put on a show, people take time out of their weeknight to watch them, and then because of a crappy timeslot or without giving it any real airtime… BOOM! its cancelled..! It not even worth getting into any shows that these 3 companies put out anymore. Its unreal how they continually play these stupid games. I can think of more than a dozen shows that my wife & I as well as plenty of the people we know, get or have gotten into and before you know it… Their cancelled. Its gotten so bad that the time my wife & I spend watching NBC, ABC, & CBS has dwindled down to a trickle. We spend more nights watching Blu-Ray's that I pick up off-line at a fraction of the cost that the stores sell them for. These numbskulls are going to ruin it for themselves it they keep playing these laim games.
And whats even more funny is that these same damn companies will release these cancelled series on DVD and alot of people who liked the show will buy them thinking that either the series is still ongoing, or that they'll atleast get an ending to them. Case in point, the series "Surface". I knew alot of people who where into this show and most of the local video stores had actually purchased the "Season One" dvd sets not having any idea that the series had been cancelled. $40. and there wasn't even an ending to the show.
What a joke.

Fantastic show, awesome cast, love love love it. I'm hoping they at least continue the series in Canada so I can catch it on DVD. Dow we really need another Firefly, Pushing Daisies, or Kings…can we please get something other then cop drama on t.v. Maybe encourage people to think a little about something other than suv's and murder and twisted relationship drama? Let's have three cheers for some actually thought provoking televsion!!!

And I don't know why they plan to air them later on, now once they do the ratings for them will be complete shit. Due to the fact that hardcore fans like me just get on the net and watch the webrips from sites like SPACE. No need to watch them on TV now when they do air.

I can't believe they're canceling (or possibly canceling) this show! I just found out about it. If this show was airing on Fox or some other station known for SciFi it would being doing spectacular. I rarely ever tune into ABC. And im sure most people interested in this show don't often either. I found Defying Gravity on Hulu and was immediately hooked. I hope the syfy channel picks it up. The great thing about this show is its not just cheesy science fiction its a very honest look into peoples lives. The writers need to be commended. My favorite episodes are "Bacon" and of course the final episode "Kiss". Grr…. this really ticks me off

Just finished watching the last episodes using streaming providers hulu and megavideo (big thanks to these sites). I have to say the series was very good from start to end. Nice cliff hanger at the end, definitely a good reason for another season.
The handling of this show reminds me so much of how Fox mismanaged “Firefly”. At least the episodes were shown in sequence and you can follow the story line. For someone who thinks reality TV is a mindless waste, I really appreciate the time it takes to put a series like this together. Too bad America wants their TV with zero content and low brow humor.
Cheers,
George

Some of the best and most innovative shows do not survive. Remember that the original Star Trek got canned, then outcries kept it going so who knows? As an avid sci fan, this is one of the best in years- only the Firefly series comes to mind as having this level of anticipation (paralleling the same fate?). Oh well, maybe someone can come up with the bucks to finish it off with a movie as well…..Sci-Fi Channel: are you listening!!!

Just finished Episode 10 and have downloaded 11 – 13 on Graboid. I kind of lucked out finding it and had never seen or heard anything about it before. But I was hooked from the 1st episode. Hopefully SYFY will pick it up like they did StarGate and at least get to Pluto.

“… it’s fate is still unknown.”
The possessive of it does not take an apostrophe. What you said is “It is fate is still unknown” … which is obviously wrong.

Just watched the entire series on DVD. Can't believe they cancelled this wonderful series. The story lines would easily be worth 6 seasons. Hope someone has the good sense to pick it up.
Just try using a proxy server from within the country you are banned from.. :) just a tid bit advice to ya.. :) should help.. and if you don't know how to find one.. just google proxy server.. :)
I am very bummed about this show being cancelled. I had never heard of it until the DVD came out…..can anyone say bad pr for the show? How come anytime there is actually a good series with good actors out there, they cancel the series? It's one of those mysteries or is it peoples bad taste in what is out there? By the way if you haven't seen Caprica…..then see it! Good show with strong actors.
my husband and i just finished watching the season 1 of Defying Gravity…and CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE GONNA LEAVE US HANGING LIKE THIS!! what a great show! they always cancel the good ones, don't they?? what's with all the reality shows?? don't we have enough reality as it is?? i hope ABC or whoever will bring back DG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
