Dexter season 5 casting news, spoilers

Julia Stiles and Shawn Hatosy have now both be confirmed by Showtime that they will appear in the fifth season of Dexter, with both these castings inspiring thoughts of some of my favourite movies from the late 90s (10 Things I Hate About You and The Faculty) and making me wonder where Stiles has been since the last Bourne instalment. Ausiello over at Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive on both castings and has vague descriptions of who they will be playing:

Shawn Hatosy is making a pit stop in Miami before returning to Southland: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Hatosy has booked a multi-episode arc on Dexter.

A Showtime rep declined to divulge details on his character, but a recent Dexter casting call may offer a clue: The drama was seeking a thirtysomething actor to play the recurring role of a no-nonsense FBI agent. UPDATE: So much for my FBI theory. A source close to the show tells me that Hatosy is playing “a bad guy.”

This marks the second major piece of casting for Dexter‘s upcoming fifth season. As I reported last month, Julia Stiles is also joining the cast as a mysterious young woman who forms a unique relationship with Dexter.

After completing his Dexter arc later this summer, Hatosy will head immediately into production on Southland‘s 10-episode third season.

The new season of Dexter will start where it left off; with Rita dead. Factors such as Dexter's dark passenger, being a possible suspect in his wife's death, the Trinity killers family knowing him as Kyle Butler and his status as a single father should take this season in an interesting direction. The decision to kill Rita was a shocking one but it opens up many avenues for where this character and series can go, much more so than if she were still alive. This isn't the last we will see of Julie Benz though who will also reprise her role of Rita in some capacity that has yet to be divulged.

Best thing the writers/producers did for this show was to kill Rita. She was so unbearable.

  2. McPatriot says:

I'm with you Buzmeg! A whining, sole sucking character…..I was hoping Dexter would do it!

  3. sgt doakes says:

  4. Stories11 says:

I'm so glad they killed her off, I was sure dexter didn't do it because of "Harry's code" I never saw it coming. right now I'm curious as to what will happen to the kids, they come home mom dead in the bathtub, Harrison and Dexter gone, can't wait to see it

  5. Brad says:

Wow are you guys serious? Rita was his wife ffs, she's allowed to be sort of naggy. When she was only his girlfriend she appeared vulnerable because she had no right to control his life…

  6. Thesuperglue says:

I never liked Rita but basically accepted her as being an integral role in Dexter's life. I was suuuupppper shocked when they killed her off but pleasantly surprised as well. The fifth season is wide open to take Dexter's story in any direction the production wants to go. This completely reinvents the story and made me fall in love with the show all over again. Sweeeet!!

  7. PHILLIP22 says:

Killing Rita was an amazing move. I liked her character (which makes me sad that she's dead) but it was a smart move for DEXTER. Gosh I LOVE that show
