Yesterday we reported on the surprising news that Chris Cuomo was going to be leaving Good Morning America (surprising because it was so sudden). Cuomo announced that he would still be on ABC, however, and would take over the co-anchor job on the nighttime news show 20/20.
Unlike Chris Cuomo's announcement, Diane Sawyer had given plenty of notice that she would be leaving Good Morning America and taking over Charles Gibson's anchor position at "World News" (Gibson is retiring).
Diane Sawyer has been part of the political and news landscape in the United States since the early 1970s. From 1978 to 1989, she was a political correspondent and co-anchor of the CBS Morning News, and then 60 Minutes. Sawyer moved to ABC in 1989 to co-anchor Primetime Live with Sam Donaldson (a former co-anchor of 20/20, back when Barbara Walters was also co-anchoring the news program) and even 20/20.
Diane Sawyer moved back to morning news in 1999, when she joined the Good Morning America team as co-anchor with Charles Gibson. With Sawyer taking over the ABC World News Anchor spot, and Katie Couric over at CBS, that means that two of the three big networks have female anchors (although the Couric experiment hasn't worked out so well, so we will have to see if Sawyer can do better).
Interesting piece of trivia: Diane Sawyer used to work for Richard Nixon's administration in the 1970s as White House Press Secretary. For many years, it was suspected that Sawyer was actually "Deep Throat", the person who helped Bob Woodward expose the Watergate scandal and cover-up by Nixon and his administration. If you watched Frost/Nixon, you will also have noticed that Diane Sawyer (or the actress playing her), helped prep Nixon for his famous interview with British journalist, David Frost.
Diane Sawyer's last morning on Good Morning America occurred earlier today, and it was apparently an emotional time for everyone (it was also Chris Cuomo's last day on GMA).
Sawyer will be replaced on Good Morning America by George Stephanopoulos. Stephanopoulos currently serves as the network's chief Washington and political correspondent and anchor on ABC's "This Week".
George Stephanopoulos will take over as co-anchor with Robin Roberts beginning on Monday.
