My Eight Favorite Movie Sequels

We’re not sure who it was, but at some point there was a guy who said, “There’s nothing like the original.”

While that can hold true in some cases, I’d argue that, while rare, sometimes the sequel isn’t just as good, but possibly even better.

Take these eight movies for instance, which, for a variety of reasons, would actually be the movie I chose over the original flick.

8. Paranormal Activity 2

Though this second film was more enjoyable to watch, because the secret was already out from the original, I didn’t find it nearly as gut-wrenching.

Still, one can’t ignore how they combined the plots together and tied the stories into each other.

Good for people who saw the first film, maybe a bit confusing for those who didn’t—though I’m guessing most folks didn’t just dive into the sequel first.

7. Scream 2

If you’re anything like us, then the first Scream is still a flick you don’t mind watching anytime it’s on TV.

But as much as the original mocked itself—and the entire scary movie genre—the second one included even wittier commentary from the characters, a great plot to reveal the killer and another memorable opening scene.

6. The Mighty Ducks 2

One can argue that the Ducks wouldn’t be what they had become if not for the original.

While that’s true, we just appreciate the second flick so much more than the District-5 days.

With new characters and a more mature plot, we like the whole Junior Goodwill Games angle Disney took to feature the Minnesota Miracle Man and his crazy hockey gang.

5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Though those Griswold’s introduced us to Cousin Eddie and the debauchery a family trip can cause, it wasn’t until they released the Christmas version of the series that made us really appreciate how dysfunctional family get-togethers really are.

To this day, it still features one of the best rants in movie history (NSFW).

4. Ghostbusters 2

Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love the Stay Puft Marshallow Man and Sigourney Weaver’s character being possessed as Zuul, but the second film has a better plot.

Even more hilarious one-liners and made every kid younger than 10 that there really was a river of slime beneath the city of New York which made people unruly towards each other.

3. Toy Story 2

We remember being in eighth grade when this got released and thinking it could never come close to the originality of the first.

But thanks to great storytelling and even more innovative animation, everyone who worked on this film should be applauded.

We’re not sure what it is about this movie, but whenever it’s on, even at our age now, we just can’t help but get caught-up in it.

2. The Dark Knight

OK, so this wasn’t the original sequel in the Batman fixtures, but of the newer generation with Christian Bale acting as the Caped Crusader, it’s the second in the series.

With an amazing opening scene that you regret missing if you were late to the theater and a bad guy who made you squirm at how evil he really was, it has everything a great movie needs.

1. The Godfather Part II

I’m Italian, so anytime I hear that someone’s even considering watching one of the Godfather films, I’m all for it.

The plot from the sequel—featuring the Corleone family—is absolutely riveting, and by adding De Niro alongside the already established Pacino character is an absolute ingenious call.
