Joan Rivers is on life support, her family confirms.
Back on Aug. 28, the actress, comedian, and TV personality was admitted to New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital after experiencing complications during surgery at a clinic. In a statement released today by her daughter, Melissa, it has been revealed that Rivers is in fact on life support.
“On behalf of my mother and our family, we are extremely grateful for all the love and support we’ve received,” Melissa Rivers said in the statement. “At this time she does remain on life support.”
Details on Joan Rivers’ condition have been scarce since the news broke over the weekend. However, the Associated Press does report that Rivers went into cardiac arrest during throat surgery on the morning of Aug. 28 and was then immediately taken to the hospital.
While her first work was on the stage during the 1950s, Rivers quickly became a film and television celebrity throughout the 60s and 70s with appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Carol Burnett Show, and Hollywood Squares. Her more recent TV credits include Nip/Tuck, Louie, and Hot in Cleveland.
Although Rivers is probably most famous for her stand-up comedy, she has become even more popular in recent years as one of the hosts of the E! series Fashion Police, alongside Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos. On the show, Rivers is well-known for making outlandish, over-the-top jokes about celebrities, which some have deemed as “mean.” However, as proven by the outpouring of support that has been shown on social media over the past few days, Rivers still remains very popularity with those in Hollywood.
