Fox announced Thursday that they will be airing the pilot episode of Ronald D. Moore's Virtuality on Saturday, July 4th. According to The Futon Critic, the two-hour pilot for Virtuality will air at 8:00/7:00c.
The plot of Virtuality is set aboard the Phaeton, Earth's first starship, which is on a ten-year journey to explore a distant planetary system. To endure the 10-year journey, the astronauts use virtual reality modules which allow them to assume avatars and explore self-created scenarios. Just as the mission is about to enter its critical go/no-go phase, a virus begins to infect the system and puts all of their lives on the line.
The ensemble cast is headed by Clea DuVall (Carnivàle), and is comprised of Erik Jensen, Gene Farber, James D'Arcy, Jimmi Simpson , Jose Pablo Cantillo, Joy Bryant, Kerry Bishe, Nelson Lee, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Omar Metwally, Richie Coster and Sienna Guillory.
This is a good news/bad news scenario for those of us who are still mourning the loss of Ronald D. Moore's Battlestar Galactica, and want to have the creative mind behind the ground-breaking show back at the helm of a weekly show as soon as possible. The good news is we will get to see the two-hour pilot he co-wrote with Michael Taylor, and which was directed by Peter Berg, the creative mind behind Friday Night Lights, among other things. However, the fact that Fox is confirming the pilot episode is airing before their upfronts later this month, which serve the purpose of wooing advertisers, does not bode well for a series pick-up. Add that to the fact that Virtuality is scheduled for the 4th of July, which falls on a Saturday this year, and the two hour pilot is airing during a time most people will not be home watching television. This is hardly a ringing endorsement by Fox, and leaves significant doubt that the series will get a pick-up from Fox.
Ronald D. Moore just came off the release of the two hour premier of Caprica on the SciFi Channel, which coincided with a straight to DVD release. Caprica has already been given a full-season pickup of 20 episodes, scheduled to begin airing in 2010. So have heart, Ronald D. Moore devotees, he will definitely be back in 2010, regardless of the outcome of Virtuality.

This sounds vaguely interesting… heavy on the vague. I'm not quite sure I get the concept yet. But I'm always up for a summer series to get me through hiatus so I'll probably give it a go.
Keep in mind Featherlite, this isn't a summer series. They're just going to release the 2 hour pilot. That's all we get. :(
Well. Damn. I'll try it anyway but if I like it I hope I'm not waiting too long for the series. I'm not a BSG fan, so I'm not looking forward to Caprica.
"Not a BSG fan"??? Does.Not.Compute.
