katherin-heiglWe've got a great Grey's Anatomy spoiler for you directly from Jennifer Godwin at E!Online.  News just broke that Katherine Heigl will be leaving Grey's for an extended hiatus of aproximately  5 episodes.  Her hiatus from the show will start in the coming weeks but won't be seen on air until sometime around November.  This also means that Ellen Pompeo will be gone from the show around the same time for her maternity leave.  So how will the show explain Dr. Izzie Stevens departure for so long?  Easy... the Cancer survivor is getting fired!

Apparantly a major storyline being covered this season will be the merger of Seattle Grace and their crosstown rival Mercy West.  This means that Seattle Grace will be doubling in size and bringing in a bunch of new doctors as well, and setting up Izzie's laying off or dismissal, or whatever you want to call it.  The storyline will also pave the way for Pompeo's maternity leave, as she'll fade into the background while new doctors, administrators, and nurses fill in the void.

Despite it's fantastic success, Grey's has been plagued with casting issues for some time, and has had its fair share of obstacles to overcome including  T.R. Knight’s exit and the temporary loss of Pompeo this season amongst others.  Heigl herself landed on the front page of websites for her comments about being worked too hard on the show, which made people wonder if she'd stick around, and brought about a verbal lashing from ABC president Stephen McPherson for complaining about a 17-hour work day. This new direction the show is taking will give ABC and show runners an endless amount of characters to work with and ABC can find out if Grey's can suceed without it's original star power lineup.  Their hopes are to turn Grey's into another E.R. type show which succeeded for 15 years with many characters coming and going.  But can Grey's hope to survive without the characters that started it all for us?  And will fans stick around if their favorite characters are constantly taking multi-episode hiatuses?  I'm sure the fans will say no way, but I'm sure E.R.'s fans would have said the exact same thing!
