Although this might be the second attempt that CBS is making at bringing Hawaii Five-O back to the small screen, this time it appears that we'll at least get to see a pilot for the remake. CBS has just announced that they have given a pilot commitment to an updated version of the series which will be headed up by Peter Lenkov, the Executive Producer for CSI:NY, and pop culture, mythology heavy scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
A little over a year ago CBS got our hopes up with news of an updated take on the series that ran for twelve years, only to have it fizzle before our eyes. That run never made it to production, headed by Criminal Minds executive producer Ed Bernero. But now, with a new set of showrunners, and exciting ones at that, we're sure to see this series relaunch make it to the boobtube (although nothings for sure in television).
There are no specifics known as to how Kurtzman, Orci, and Lenkov will approach the remake, but with Kurtzman and Orci's movie hits such as Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission Impossible III, and credits on television series like Alias and Fringe, its hard to imagine a series that wouldn't rely heavily on pop culture references and at least a little bit of mythology and mystery. The original Hawaii Five-O was definitely a long term success, but it was more of a straight and hard procedural; a cop drama set in a beautiful and exotic location. While one would assume that the trio would stick to the basic formula with some updated cop drama styling added in, I'll jump out and predict a little bit of a different show, and one more attuned to what we've seen from Kurtzman and Orci in the past. Let's just hope they try to give us just a touch of alias, and not so much Fringe. I mean, I love Fringe as much as the next guy, but a monster of the week in Hawaii? I don't think so.
What do you think? Does this news excite you in the slightest?
