Despite very negative reviews, TNT has renewed fledgling medical drama Hawthorne for a second season. The show, starring Jada Pinkett-Smith as Christina Hawthorne, a Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, will air the penultimate episode of its first season tomorrow night.
The show, one of TNT's nine current original shows, three of which started this year, has been recieved poorly by critics. The Boston Herald called the show "a mess," and the New York Post called the cast "flat and one-dimensional." It's been continually called "weakly written," and "unconvincing" by many critics, and the titular protagonist has been criticized for being too much of an advocate. "She can’t always be in an uproar about everything or always play the hero. The show cannot center around her at the expense of everyone else," said Amy Amatangelo of Zap2it.
All that criticism really makes me wonder why exactly the show was renewed. I haven't seen Hawthorne, and have no intentions to ever see it. I'm frankly surprised that TNT has given another chance to this obviously drowning show, however, especially when compared to the hits on the network like The Closer, Saving Grace, and even the new Dark Blue. Hawthorne seems uncharacteristically mediocre for the usually stellar network, and I can't wrap my head around why they would want this show to remain on their network after such an unpromising first year. Is it because of star Jada Pinkett-Smith? Perhaps. Whatever the cause is, let's hope that Hawthorne finds some new writing help, stat. Because if it doesn't, I simply can't see the show being renewed for yet another season.

It's not "flat" or "a mess"…it accurately portrays the life of a hospital from the sides of a nurse. It documents the hospital hierarchy and how doctors treat nurses like crap even though they do most of the work. The show is amazing and true and while it's not riddled with sex and ghosts like Grey's or a second-to-second crammed drama like ER, it's a quality watch.

It's true that Hawthorne is unable to be the hero for all of her patients. True. However, she's an advocate for her patients and to adapt that passion to the television audience, she has to be overly aggressive to demonstrate the lengths that she'll go to save someone. Each patient is someone to her, not just some body temporarily inhabiting a bed. Also, the show is called "Hawthorne" so it HAS to center around her. It's not always about her. There are nice side stories with her other nurses (Bobbi, Ray, Candy, etc.) so the show strikes a nice balance.

The critics dont know what they are talking about. I am a nurse and while this show is not completely real life, there are many times where it does deal with issues that real nurses have to deal with on a daily basis. I love the show!

The show definitely deserves a season 2, and the critics are the only idiots with the mediocre criticism for a great show. I just finished watching the first season and i cant wait unitil the next one. I lke the fact that the show focuses on nurses and a strong character like hawthorne. i feel we need someone on tv to aspire too. Not too many characters like that now a days. I just wanted to say hope the show keeps going, cant wait for the second season, and i hope the writers make the next season longer.

Ok I really do love this show. I got hooked on it then watched the rest of the season online. I don’t know why it was only 10episodes I really wanted more. I think it is great that TNT is bringing it back on for a second season. I am in the military so I am always looking to watch good shows when I am away training and trust me all of my collegues like it as well we will be watching

I think the real issue is that the critics are looking for another "ER" or "Grey's Anatomy" or "House." Guess what? Real situations in the hospital don't play out like that. I think that Hawthorne ended up being wonderfully written (though maybe a little slow to start) and that it deserves another season. Maybe if the critics stepped into a real life hospital and actually got a glimpse of some of the things nurses deal with, they'd have a clue. Also, how can a nurse be "too much of an advocate"? That is THE JOB of the nurse, to advocate for her (or his) patient! It's one of the first things that they teach you in nursing school…and yes, I'd know, I'm a nursing student. I suggest, Mr. McPherson, that you actually WATCH the show before you attempt to offer any meaningful commentary about it. Yes, maybe the show has it's flaws, but it's STILL the most accurate portrayal of a nurse on screen right now.

I don't play follow the leader. There are many shows which have been cancelled because "men don't like them". You hav en't even seen the darn show. Critics watch five mins. and then start sharpening their pencils because it is their job to entertain us with their witty barbs and sarcasm. I hate Lost, Heroes, Fringe and all those ridiculous shows going nowhere. I like Hawthorne. Many do. So please don't write it off. I like character driven stories – there's a dearth of them. Who wants another battlestar gallactica or even caprica. More like Hawthorne please, please.

Excellent, excellent show. How can the critics talk about "weak writing"? It's brilliant writing and Mrs. Smith not only brings this character to life, she excels at it. This show always left me hanging, wishing the week would fly by so I could see the next show. wTo the person above who wrote the commentary… You have no interest in seeing it, hear it sucks, and wonder why it's on? Watch it jack___… Then maybe you'll understand. Why put it down when you know nothing about it? Talking about "Just cancel it"… It's a REAL… HONEST… show. This show is great!! It had 3.8 million viewers. Numbers don't lie about how good the show is. Me and my fiance can't wait til season two starts. Look up, look down… I like Hawthorne. I'm a man. I'm on a horse. *melodic whistle*

I must admit I really enjoyed the "Hawthorn" show. I think Jada is great in it. Maybe after all the harsh word, they will add more demetion to the show. But all in all, I am for one they gave it another chance.
Since leaving the USA earlier this year I have missed Hawthorne and similar shows. I was not able to see the whole of season 1 and I am sad to be missing season 2. Please get the show over to England – do I have to return to the good old U Sof A to watch my favourite shows
I watched the first season of Hawthorne it was painful, I don't know how I hung in that long. Easily one of the worst shows I have ever seen. The story lines are lame, the acting is bad and it's poorly written. And the story lines are predictable. Worst of all you can tell the studio is hardly big enough for JPS' ego. To me JPS is fake, one dimensional and totally transparent. That God the show is not called act your way out of this wet paper sack because the JPS and the cast would all be in trouble. I heard a rumor that TNT was ready to unplug the show and put us out of our miser, but her and her husband gave them money to keep it on. ANYHOW my recommendation would be HBO's Nurse Jackie. Now that is an EXCELLENT entertaining show. Needless to say I won't be back for a second helping of Hawthorne unless I want to vomit on my TV. Someone should take this show off life support.
Hi, speaking as a registered nurse for almost 9 years, it's about time society saw medicine from the nursing side of things. I am currently studying for the USMLE step 1 and I finally got the opportunity to see Hawthorne on TNT Demand. I find it realistic and right on the mark. The only problem I had was the nurse that dressed down to shorts and a top thats unprofessional and it's just not done. To the critics, "walk a mile in my shoe". Get a job in a hospital and observe and you will see how ridiculous your comments are. How can you criticize something you can't began to understand. There are people who advocate for their patients all the time. They want to do the best job that they can for the patients. So your impling reality is not realistic which sounds pretty stupid to me. Sometimes it's a hard job, gruelling but at the end of the day we make a difference. TNT is smart for keeping Hawthorne.
"Jada" is great in the role of nurse "Christina Hawthorne". I have cried a few times wathching the depthof her character's commitment to the care of the patients on the show. I cannot wait until the new season begins, I will be there. "Critics" please be quiet, I have two family members dealing with alife threatining disease (cancer), I wish they had nurses as commited to their job and their patientsas the character Ms. Pinkett-Smith portrays on the show. Have seen one episode, not going to see another one. Not worth watching unless you are extremely into medical dramas and JPS. No offense, this whole show seems to have the unique purpose to show us what a wonderful, good, extraordinary JPS is without much concern to create an interesting storyline. There are other egos out there more interesting to watch.

I love watching hawthorne every tuesday. It's my favorite show and the love between jada and tom is played awsome and the way she plays her role in this show is amazing. and my aunt is a nurse and she dedicates her life to nursing just like how Jada does how can the critics try to turn it down when they havent even seen the half of it. If they actually observed a real hospital day by day I think they capture the picture and see that poorly isn't the word to describe such a show.

I have never been interested in or watched TNT. I started watching TNT last year, Season 1 of Hawthorne. I believe this is a great show. I was so excited about Season 2 and I hope that Season 3 continues. TNT, be SMART and keep this show going!!!! I believe the people have spoken…look at the viewers. It's not about Jada Pinkett Smith, it's about her activing abiities/skills; she has done a great job!! I look forward to Season 3 of Hawthorne. It needs to be seasonal instead of just the summer…need more episodes! Wonderul show….I just love it!!!

Yea, I really like this show. I worked in a hospital as well as have a niece and a friend who are nurses. They are very dedicated to helping their patients and would go beyond the call of duty to ensure the best care of those they are entrusted with, much like what is portrayed by the character "Christina".
Unfortunately, the critics are products of their environment. They live in a world that no longer uphold virtue, morals, and cleanness. Instead they praise and elevate gore, sleeze, and cheapness, often portrayed in the shows they give a high ranking. I don't know whether or not to blame them or the society we live in. But you would think an educated mind is an elevated mind; apparently it is not. So……
However, I really hope TNT listens to those who choose to put value in a clean, moral show such as "Hawthorne", and give us many more seasons.
I love Hawthorne and I just finishedwatching the last episode of the second season and was md when I seen the cliffhanger they left us with. I can not wait for the next season, hopefully thy have a next season. I can't wait to find out what happens. I think critics are retards anyone. So somone paays them a crap load of money that is undeserved so they can give unwanted opinions about movies and television shows and what have you. I for one don't give a crap about what they have to say. I believe in seeing somethingfor my self before i ass judgement and it just so happens that this time it paid off. I don't regret watching a minute of this show and I am noteven a fan of Jada, but Hawthorne is changing my mind in that aspect. o pleas TNT renew Hawthorne for another season!!!!
Hawthorne is an amazing show. You can't judge a show based off of what other people said and by looking at the ratings. I tune in every Tuesday to see this and if I miss it, the next day I'll catch it online! I LOVE hawthorne because it shows "Christina Hawthorne" being a caring nurse & a loving mother. She is an amazing actress and so are the other people in this show. Please keep the seasons coming! I dont know what I'll do without this show!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE HAWTHORNEEEEE!

This is an awesome, well written, clean and caring showing for television. I cannot wait for season 3 and really hope that it will return before next summer. I am sorry the critics feel the way they do, and they should reconsider their comments as the viewers really don't feel the same way. All the characters are just beautiful and a perfect fit of their respective roles.

I love harthorne season 1 and season 2..there must be a season 3 and beyond.
I actually think that Hawthorne is a really good show and it has a lot of potential if people would just give it a chance. Everyone that I have hooked to this show agrees that it is a really good show. I do think that most of the people who do watch Hawthorne are mostly interested in Tom and Christina's relationship so if they do get back together then they should throw in some more drama then just Christina to getting pregnant. But I do think that if viewers gave the show a chance It would catch on.

Yes I believe it deserves a second season I rather enjoy the show much more than the closer. Now thats a character that I can do without. She thinks everything she go her way and thats very annoying each week to watch.
