We had wondered how this would play out. What we are referring to is the inclusion of the many horror shows over the last few years in The Emmys. If you pay attention to The Oscars, which is the bigger version of all this for film, horror gets no love. You can have actresses who put in devastating and amazing performances who never get a nod. Actors who turn themselves into believable monsters, yet they never get a nod. Well, just as expected, guess what genre got very little respect when the Emmys were just announced? Yup, you guessed right. Horror.
So what is it. Why do horror shows always get Emmy snubs? I ca give you a perfect example of a snub, right now. The always brilliant Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter. He takes an already established character (that was already terrifying) and has added about twenty more layers to him. That is a character most actors would not have the courage to try to play, and Mikkelsen nails it (pun intended). Yet, did he get a nod or a mention? Nope. The sad part is, we sort of know why.
The horror genre itself is just not taken as seriously or ever seen as “art” by the people in charge. They deem it as violent and less mature, therefore, they often refuse to acknowledge its existence. Like they hope it will just go away if ignored enough. Well, guess what? With shows like The Leftovers and The Strain ready to blow our minds, maybe it is time horror (in all mediums) got the respect it deserves.
