The short answer is yes, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Matthew Perry of Friends fame, may be returning to TV soon in a new comedy sitcom. The new sitcom is being pitched to networks this week and would feature Perry as the star, co-writer, and executive producer on the show. The project is still untitled but will follow a self-involved manager of a second-rate sports arena who turns 40 and begins to re-evaluate his life. Perry, who turned 40 in August conceived of the comedy.
Personally, I find it interesting that Perry's comedy centers on life after 40, just as fellow Friend's alum Courtney Cox's new show Cougar Town does. Although it seems obvious that the brand of humor for each show is very different, we're seeing both of these actors give us a glimpse into the same stage of life that each of them is now in. It's quite a turn from the twenty-something success they found on Friends, but in a way its enlightening and funny as well, since we've all continued to age with them (no matter how hard we've tried to fight it).
When I first heard about Cougar Town earlier this year, I wasn't excited at all, and honestly thought it would be the one new sitcom I hated most (well, second most, Hank was always going to take top honors). However, after seeing the pilot I loved it, and its one of the shows I have to watch each week. I have similar feelings about this series idea, which is to say that it doesn't excite me much on the surface, but I hope that, assuming it gets picked up by a network, Perry and company surprise me in the same way that Courtney Cox has. The new project will be produced by Sony Pictures TV.
