Katie Couric to Guest Star on Glee

For a while, there has been speculation on Katie Couric’s next career move. The former Today Show co-host and current CBS News anchor has been plagued by sagging ratings and an inflated contract that is due to expire in the near future. While her rendition of the CBS news has drawn considerable critical clout after a rocky start, viewers have stuck with ABC’s Diane Sawyer and NBC’s Brian Williams, leaving Couric in third place for much of her run. Some has stated that she was in the running for Larry King’s position (recently filled by Piers Morgan) while others have pegged the ever sunny blonde as being well suited to a return to the lighter journalism that began her career. But I don’t think anyone had this in mind.

According to Yahoo news, Katie Couric will guest star on Glee on their post-Super Bowl episode. It’s unknown how big of a part she’ll play, but Couric is slated to play herself and interview Sue, which will more than likely count her out of any of the show’s music numbers. I personally don’t see this as an awful move if it’s executed correctly. The quality of a guest star is not by how well their name fits with the show or how well known they are; the best guest stars on any comedy are those who are committed, unafraid to make fun of themselves, and never try to overshadow the show. A self-proclaimed Glee, Couric has a naturally bubbly personality, so it would be interesting to see her play something completely against type, perhaps as a former high school rival to Sue or a vampy sexpot version of herself who tries to seduce Mr. Schue.

Whatever the reasoning, I’m sure more plot details will come leaking in before the early February date of the episode. Just as long she’s not on waterskis jumping a shark, I think everything will be just fine.

Will you be watching Couric on Glee? Do you think this is the show’s “jump the shark” moment?
