Every week, TVOvermind takes a look back at the moments from the previous week that slipped below the stupid threshold, and into out and out ignoramus-y-ness. No sub-par storyline is safe, no celebutante can hide, and no gimmick gets a free pass.
Monday, October 12's Dumbest Moment - Heroes' Girl on Gimmick Action
JON: Let’s look at this logically for a second. In terms of dramatic challenge, writing a character arc where a hitherto hetero-sexual Claire finds out her quirky room-mate has fallen in love with her could be groundbreaking television if it were done with the social intricacies such a relationship would unleash in real life. Sure it would be hard to do it without coming off as exploitative, swerve too much into the ‘hot chicks’ sucking face and you might be accused of producing soft-core “lesbianism for men.”
Not to worry though, Heroes would never even attempt to do a sub-plot like this with the intent of exploring social taboo – they reached straight for the gallon jug of sensationalism and dumped it all over last week’s episode. Seriously, hello GLAAD? I think I’d rather listen to Mickey Roarke spout the ‘other’ f-bomb all day long then have my intelligence insulted like this.
Only time can tell us the complete extent of their insensitivity. This week Claire will no doubt flip through a couple issues of Hustler to see if this whole ‘gay thing’ is for her. Although, since the much fussed about smooch did absolutely nothing for Heroes’ ratings you can rest assured it will join the dozen or so other aborted story-lines.
