LOST’s Damon Lindelof Returning to Television … Maybe

LOST Co-Creator Damon Lindelof is returning to television with a project that is as much a custom fit as he could ask for. Let’s put it this way, Stephen King called the source material, Tom Perrotta’s The Leftovers, “… the best Twilight Zone episode you never saw.’Since Lindelof played a major role in creating the closest thing to Twilight Zone in contemporary television, it’s a no-brainer to think he should be able to do this project justice. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Perrotta himself will be Lindelof’s partner on the adaptation being developed for HBO.

The story itself concerns the aftermath of a rapture style event, where billions of people simply vanish from the face of the earth while others remain to puzzle over where they went, why they went, and what will become of those left behind. Lindelof will co-write the Pilot episode with Perrotta and HBO will then decide on the script whether or not to move forward with a pilot.

Lindelof’s plan for the series is to introduce new characters and story-lines not found in the book, thus creating a broader canvas to keep the story going beyond the confines of the relatively short novel. In speaking with Vulture, Lindelof revealed, much to fan’s delight I’m sure, that his interest in The Leftovers is relative to the creative energy that made LOST a global phenomenon. “It takes us back in time to a place in human history where everyone’s lives were dictated by the gods of Olympus or the gods of the heavens. [The book] tries to explain the purpose of it all, and that lined up with the meta level of LOST.”

No pressure Lindelof, but it looks like the wait for a ‘new LOST‘ might be coming to an end.
