There's a quote in this episode ("Black Gold and Red Blood") that's quite wonderful and compact. Very Buddhist. When Jane is confronting the top dog in the prison hall, he suddenly says something like, "You know, if you just dropped your opinions for and against things, you'd be a lot happier." Just discovered your site through a link on IMDB; nice summary. I hope you don't mind me saying, but I don't think the man who pulled the knife was the victim's father. They way I understood it, the victim (Kirby Hines) just married into the Gerber family, and has nothing to do with the feud. The man who pulled the knife (Luscom) is from the other feuding family, but was not related to the victim. (Not trying to be nit-picky; it confused me enough to rewind a few times, so I thought someone else might benefit from the correction.)
