Deadline.com have exclusively announced that the big three networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) are all warring over bringing Darren Starr's (Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Sex and the City) adaptation of Kim Gatlin's novel Good Christian Bitches to the small screen. The dramedy will focus on a recently divorced mother of two, Amanda Vaughn, who returns to her hometown of Dallas, TX and has to endure the snobbery and gossip from the ladies of Hillside Park.
The project would be overseen by Starr with the pilot to be written by Robert Harling, who is best known for creating "Steel Magnolias", one of the most known chick flicks known to man. He also created the stageplay and 1990 CBS pilot of the same name. Harling adapted another book, Olivia Goldsmith's "The First Wives Club", for the big screen, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Sarah Jessica Parker in 1996. Starr and Harling will executive produce the show alongside Aaron Kaplan.
The website for the book compares it to two different shows, Desperate Housewives and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, which opens up a whole new level of potential if it ever lands a network and is picked up to series. With that being said, does anyone else beside me think that the title will be a bit of a hard sell? Don't get me wrong. I'm no fuddy duddy (I watch stuff horror movies to The Real Housewives franchise for God's Sakes), but selling that title will have Christian groups and the dreaded PTC (Parents Television Council) lined up for battle across the board. True, we got more than enough "immoral" shows on the air now, but the word "bitches" describing Christians is sure to piss someone off. Best believe that my eyes will be ready to roll if it does happen.
So will you like to see Good Christian Bitches come to fruition at a network? Or will you give it a pass if it does?
