If you’re like me, you’re really loving AMC right now. The network that used to be known for playing westerns on the weekend is now known for its fantastic original content, including Mad Men and Breaking Bad (and the upcoming Rubicon). Here’s one new show that’s cropping up in October: The Walking Dead, adapted from a comic book series. As you can tell from the title, it’s about zombies. And, to my knowledge, it’s the first TV show I’ve seen to focus on zombies, creatures that are usually delegated to shorter formats like movies or music videos (you know the one I’m talking about).
It seems to me like AMC might just be doing the right job with this show, which is set to start up its six-episode season in October. Not only is it helmed by Frank Darabont, the genius director behind The Shawshank Redemption, but it’s playing up its comic-book origins in any way it can — and that’s a good thing.
Up until recently, the logo for this series mimicked the bright red letters of the comics. Now, it seems, it’s gone for a more subdued green text that looks like it was written with a crayon. Still looks really ghoul cool, especially when you take into account the poster it’s going with, which hit at Comic-Con this weekend. It would look really sort of cliche if it didn’t look so much like a comic book. That’s what I like about it so much — even though the images are obviously taken from real people — the zombie on the left has been seen in many promotional photos — they’ve been edited to look colored-pencilly, and that effect is rather cool. I can’t wait to see how the marketing campaign for this series evolves as we get closer and closer to its start date in October.
