The Most Pirated TV Shows of 2013

Although we don’t condone such behavior, the fact of the matter is that there are millions of people around the globe who get music, movies and TV shows from downloading them illegally online.

And since it happens, there has been research done that has actually shown which things have been the most popular.

Naturally, we were interested in the most pirated TV shows of 2013, which is what we’re giving you today.

5. Dexter – 3.1 million

Recently wrapping up its eighth and final season, Dexter was one of those shows that was tough to turn away from.

Whether it was viewers tuning-in when new episodes were still being run, or the series finale in the fall of last year, there were plenty of people who wanted to see what twists each season was going to take, with over 3.1 million people downloading the show last year alone.

4. The Big Bang Theory – 3.4 million

With over 150 episodes and seven seasons on-air, The Big Bang Theory is a show that many have watched from day one.

Still, with so many syndicated reruns of the show on a variety of different channels, it’s a bit shocking to me to see it so high on this list, with 3.4 million people downloading it from piracy sites.

3. The Walking Dead – 3.6 million

While a few on this list actually appreciate the compliment of sorts for so many people wanting to view their show, executive producer of The Walking Dead, Gale Anne Hurd, wasn’t as complimentary—which is understood.

She told Variety magazine that she doesn’t see the good in piracy by viewers, insisting it’s bad for TV.

Unfortunately for her, it’s hard to crack down on, yet her show has maintained 3.6 million viewers because of it.

2. Breaking Bad – 4.2 million

With the entire series wrapping up last year, it’s probably no surprise that viewers used piracy sites to make sure they knew about everything from start to finish with Walter White and the plot in Breaking Bad.

And while past seasons and episodes could have easily been watched on streaming services like Netflix, many people chose the alternative route, downloading it illegally instead.

1. Game of Thrones – 5.9 million

One of the most popular shows on TV right now, the HBO fantasy drama has become just as big online with piraters who just refuse to pay their cable service for HBO.

Coming in with nearly two million more downloads than the runner-up, Game of Thrones will continue to grow as the drama becomes even more intense.

  1. It would be more interesting to see the statistics about how many of the downloads were from outside the US. I believe most of the piracy (for TV) is a result of delayed air dates in other countries. We are only beginning to see next day air dates and simulcast broadcasts in the past few years in the UK and even then only with the bigger dramas. Comedies very rarely get such a quick turnaround which leads people to piracy and considering they already do it and they are already on the website, then why not just get the drama shows they watch because it’s available.
