Project Runway Spin-off Ready to Strut

Deadline.com is reporting that a new Project Runway spin-off is in the works. Whereas previous incarnations of the former Bravo hit have focused on the models, Tim Gunn, and former contestants, the next spinoff will be all about the accessories.

If handled properly, this could be a pretty good show. My main problem with the last few seasons of Project Runway is that they’ve gotten so far away from the actual construction of the garments and headed down a road of backstabbing, name calling, and overall ugliness that the intent of the show seems to be lost in translation. A show focusing on accessories could get back to the bare bones approach of the first few seasons of Project Runway, eliminating the awful time crunches and allowing a closer look at what goes into a design. However, it could have a reverse effect. Making gowns takes a tremendous amount of time and effort, so if that was deemed not “exciting” enough for TV, what’s to stop a show about accessories (an aspect of fashion that likely takes less time to create, therefore providing less footage) from being a continuation of the current incarnation of Project Runway?

If I were running the show, I would get three credible, intelligent figures from the accessories industry to act as judges (and if one or more of them cannot be there, only the regulars would have a hand in deciding who gets eliminated). I’d throw in a lot of truly creative challenges and recruit contestants that were more focused on getting their career going than appearing on the next episode of The Soup. I’d remember that there is an innumerable amount of trashy backbiting reality fare on television, so the main thing that can make a spin-off of Project Runway standout is to focus on its class and integrity.

Would you watch a show about the making of accessories? Do you think it would be better than Project Runway?
