Shatner is 'Dad' for CBS

Back in November, I posted about Sh** My Dad Says, a wonderful Twitter feed posted by Justin Halperin, a writer for Maxim magazine, who has made a name for himself by posting humorous quotations from his father on the social networking site, where he has amassed 1,171,663 followers (as of this posting). If you can't tell, it's one of the most popular Twitter feeds around.

But to call Halperin's father Sam's quotations humorous might be a bit of an understatement. Let me put it in a better way: if you love George Carlin, you'll love Sam Halperin. Sam's profanity-laced witticisms are a wonderful mix of wisdom and insults; they show that he cares about Justin but also show that he doesn't care what Justin thinks, even though Justin (along with over a million people) find it hilarious enough to keep track of online. Not sure what I'm talking about? See the quotation below:

"Sprain, huh? Did you go to medical school?... Well I did, so spare me your dog-shit diagnosis and lemme look at your ankle."

It's no wonder then that CBS is developing a pilot based on the Twitter feed. Seems like it's rife with comic opportunity, doesn't it?

So, who better to play Sam than... William Shatner? Shatner, who is 78 but doesn't look it, is close to the age of Sam, who, according to the Twitter account, is 74. And Shatner can read Twitter like no one's business. Remember that wonderful "Twitter poetry" he did on the Conan-helmed Tonight Show? I can only imagine Shatner's delivery of Sam's lines to be somewhat similar to this.

It's also fitting that Shatner plays Sam, especially when you look at the one person who the Sh**MyDadSays Twitter account is following: Shatner's fellow Star Trek cast member Levar Burton (although Burton appeared in The Next Generation, while Shatner was in The Original Series).

What do you think? Does Shatner have what it takes to pull off the witticisms of Sam?
