‘Single Ladies’ Head To VH1, While ‘The Lying Game’ Begins At ABC Family

VH1 must’ve gotten tired of their reality show slate as they are now venturing into unknown territory: scripted television. In other news, ABC Family is bringing more secrets and lies to light by adapting another book from author Sara Shepard, the blessed soul who gave us Pretty Little Liars.

What would you get if you took BET’s The Game, added a dash of Basketball Wives and The Real Housewives of Atlanta, then gave it a Sex and the City makeover? You would receive Single Ladies, the first hour-long scripted television to come across VH1’s production slate, which stars Stacey Dash (“Clueless”), LisaRaye McCoy (“Players Club”, All of Us) Charity Shea (The Best Years). The cable network will premiere the movie version, which will serve as a backdoor pilot in July 2011 with the series to begin afterwards. The first season will consist of 8 episodes.

The movie and show comes from Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment. Queen Latifah will make a special appearance in the series, while celebrities like Common, Eve, Chilli, Kim Porter and Lauren London will pop up in the film. Here’s a snippet from the press release:

Single Ladies is a comedic drama about Val, Keisha, and April – three best friends with different philosophies on sex and relationships. Val (Stacey Dash) is an ambitious aspiring fashion mogul who wants to find a true partner. Keisha (LisaRaye McCoy), on the other hand, is a former video dancer just looking for a rich man to keep her in style. April (Charity Shea,) has supposedly found the perfect man and the perfect marriage – but is learning that marriage isn’t necessarily a happy ending. “Single Ladies” is a modern, sexy series set in the world of Atlanta fashion, music, and celebrity that will constantly explore which woman has the right approach to relationships.

DB Woodside (24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will also star in both the movie and series.

Over at ABC Family, a new mystery is about to begin. The cable network is working on adapting Sara Shepard’s The Lying Game into a television series with veteran primetime soap writer Charles Pratt, Jr. (Melrose Place, Desperate Housewives) writing the pilot and Mark Piznarski (Gossip Girl) directing, according to Deadline.com. The drama revolves around twin sisters separated at birth. While one twin was raised in the foster system, the other sister was living it up with her wealthy adoptive parents… until she disappeared. (I’m sold already.)

The book of the same name has not been released yet, but it will be the first in a series of novels. We will keep you posted on this development as more news is released. The novel will be released on December 7, 2010.

Are you looking forward to these new dramas? Is VH1 going in the right direction with Single Ladies and wouldn’t The Lying Game be the perfect companion show to Pretty Little Liars?
