After a week off, LOST came back in a big way with “The Candidate,” the episode which ended the lives of Sun, Jin, Sayid, and Frank(?), and revealed the Man in Black as a real meanie, considering he was responsible for all of those deaths and showed absolutely no remorse for it. In fact, he knew that there were survivors of the sub explosion and he headed off to finish the job by offing them, too. But why is he doing that? What makes him so bad? Next week’s “Across the Sea” will bring us some major, major answers to this guy’s backstory.
When he isn’t played by the always-wonderful Terry O’Quinn, the Man in Black is portrayed by Titus Welliver, who brings a likable, almost friendly vibe to the character. He’s played opposite Mark Pellegrino (his mortal enemy Jacob) many times, but “Across the Sea” promises to bring their most important meeting ever, just by looking at this promo. But first, they were children.
This sneak peek for the episode (which follows an earlier sneak peek we posted this morning) follows who are obviously a young Jacob and MIB hunting boar in the jungle, only to discover that someone else has killed the boar… someone else whose face has been interestingly shrouded by foliage. Are they just toying with us by not showing the faces, or have we seen these characters before, somehow? Speculators have claimed to see Sawyer and Sayid in the scene, but I’m not buying it. Whoever they are, it’s likely that they built the statue… and that they’re not friendly.
Watch the promo below, and tune into next week’s episode, entitled “Across the Sea” (after which there will only be two more episodes left in the series: the episode “What They Died For,” which reunites us with our castaways in the aftermath of “The Candidate,” and then “The End, Parts 1 & 2,” which will be two-and-a-half hours long and will definitely live up to its title.
