Saturday Night Live produces a lot of sketches on a regular basis. Unfortunately, this means that some of those sketches fail to make it into the broadcasts. This doesn’t necessarily mean that said sketches are not worth watching, as shown by the general consensus that the Natalie Portman one with the stepchildren was one of the better pieces of material to come out of Saturday Night Live in years and years. As a result, interested individuals might want to check out Saturday Night Live‘s YouTube account, which offers a way to see the sketches that were never broadcast with greater convenience than ever before.
One excellent example of the sketches that fail to make it into the broadcast involved The Shape of Water, which has proven to be fertile grounds for comedy in spite of the fact that its premise was executed with exceptional skill. After all, the movie literally came into existence because Guillermo del Toro was disappointed with the fact that the Gill-man from The Creature From the Black Lagoon didn’t get the girl in the end, which is why he put so much effort into making the Fish Man a lot better-looking than most people would expect based on a name like the Fish Man. Moreover, the series of events leading up to the release of The Shape of Water makes the whole thing that much more amusing, as shown by the not uncommon schadenfreude when one learns that Universal Studios turned down del Toro’s proposed project in preference for starting up its Dark Universe with a particularly boring and uninspired mummy flick.
Regardless, the sketch is interesting because it features the Fish Man from The Shape of Water making a choice to pursue artistic fulfillment rather than commercial success in the wake of playing said character in said movie. Unfortunately, this doesn’t turn out so well for him, which isn’t helped by the fact that his Fish Man friend who takes the road that he didn’t take does much better. Something that makes the whole sketch that much more surreal and thus that much more entertaining.
