snlSNL is one of those things that is either really good or really bad.  It floundered for a while (I think in the late 1990s), then it resurged again with people like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.  Nowadays, I love the digital shorts and anything with Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig (Wiig is hilarious).  So for the first time in seven years, SNL will be airing a holiday special, which will feature new material by current cast members and other stars, as well as favorite holiday sketches from seasons past.

SNL GETS INTO THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT WITH "SNL PRESENTS: A VERY GILLY CHRISTMAS" A TWO-HOUR PRIMETIME SPECIAL ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17 FROM 8PM-10PM ET ON NBC

NEW YORK - December 8, 2009 - SNL premieres a new holiday compilation, "SNL Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas" on Thursday, December 17 from 8:00pm - 10:00pmET. This is SNL's first holiday special since 2002.

The two-hour special will include brand-new material with Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, the infamous troublemaker "Gilly" (played by Kristen Wiig), and others. The special will also feature favorite holiday-themed sketches from SNL's 35-year history.

SNL holiday favorite sketches will include "NPR's Delicious Dish and the Schweddy Balls" with Alec Baldwin, "A Holiday Wish" with Steve Martin, alongside newer fare like Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg's "D**k in a Box."

I bet you're wondering why Steve Martin and Alec Baldin are featured so prominently in the special, aren't you?  Both of them are funny, funny guys, but it raises questions, yes?  Well, Martin has hosted the show many, many times (according to IMDB, over 20 times), as has Baldwin (nearly 20 times).  But you want to know what else these guys have in common?  They're hosting the 2010 Oscars.  Together.  Sure, the Oscars will be broadcasted on ABC this year (but they have varied between ABC and NBC since the beginning), but this could still be considered a dress rehersal to get people psyched up for the dynamic hosting team duo.  At least, this is my theory.  Oh well, it could be worse.
