What Will You Be Marathoning This Summer?

This week is where the summer TV season really kicks off with a bang. For some, this is a fantastic time, as their favorite shows are on during the summer or they may just be relieved to have a lighter TV schedule. Something about focusing more on real life or something. Whatever. For others, it’s pure torture, as networks head into mostly repeats with new reality shows sprinkled in and some cable channels aren’t bringing out their summer programming for weeks or months.

Me? I see it as a chance to have a pretty decent TV schedule and to really delve into some of the shows that have been sitting on my ‘to watch’list for a while. I spent last summer watching Lost and Six Feet Under with a couple of shorter shows mixed in to keep things fresh and I had been thinking of what to watch this time around.

Why not try something that I’ve started a bunch and haven’t made much progress in? Which led me to Queer as Folk, Showtime’s remake/adaptation of the British series of the same name. Lasting from 2000-2005, the drama was extremely groundbreaking, touching on aspects of gay life that hadn’t been seen on television before and opening up the lines for dialogue in terms of sexuality, health, politics, and every other major issue the show addressed. It’s a bold, brave series and despite how much progress has been made in terms of LGBT representation on television, there’s still not as much variety in terms of the role the character plays in his/her respective series, so a show that has neither rose-colored glasses or severe disdain for its gay characters is refreshing and pretty provocative.

And, well, I’ve started it at least 4 times without making a dent in the first season, so it needs to finally be watched.

Once I manage to see what the boys from Pittsburgh went through at the dawn of a new millennium (I’m a little into season 2), I’m a little torn as to what to watch next. I’m thinking of watching The Shield, mostly because I loved both of Shawn Ryan’s shows this season and it’s held in such high regard, but I have several shows still on the list that I’d love to see (The Sopranos, Angel, The X-Files, etc.) and I’m a tad bit indecisive.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still be indulging in my fair share of summer TV. The show I’m most excited for is the next season of Weeds because of how stellar last season was, but there are enough reality shows (Basketball Wives, Haunted Collector), comedies (Happily Divorced), intense dramas (Damages), and everything else to keep this TV freak occupied for another few months until season starts again. I just need that little extra serving of TV to keep my mind occupied (mmm, gluttony) and being able to finally say “yes, I have seen that and let me tell you what I thought” always feels pretty darn good.

So tell me, TVOvermind readers. What will you be marathoning this summer, if anything? Will it be something still current that you’re catching up on or an old favorite that seemingly everybody’s seen but you? Do you like to marathon your shows alone or with someone else? Feel free to also let me know what summer TV you’ll be watching.
