Supernatural Spares The Shark, Jumps the Ghoul Instead

Meet Adam, The Newest Winchester

It was a tense night for Supernatural fans.  Did Eric Kripke dare go there?  Add another Winchester?  With all of the big screen success that has befallen Jared Padalecki (Sam) and Jensen Ackles this year, could the arrival of a long lost brother signal a season 5 casting shakeup in the making? Nah.  Of course, if you were paying attention to those folks in the know - read: us - you already knew the truth, Adam was indeed Sam and Dean's long lost brother.  Now, how do you pull that off without disturbing the delicate balance of the Supernatural-verse?  With a twist, of course.

Supernatural "Jump the Shark" was far and above one of the best episodes this season.  For starters, it managed to handle self referential pop-culture nods throughout by planting multiple easter eggs that recalled too many infamous Shark jumping moments to name in one place (okay, here's a few... Cousin Oliver's diner is Cousin Oliver who joined the Brady Bunch.  Shark Jump.  Sonny Bono's solo gig, leaving Cher alone on the variety show. Shark Jump. There's more, trust me.)  With all of that fun, it still managed to be one of the most morbid episodes of the year with Dean crawling through dark tunnels not once, but twice, and getting trapped in creepy tombs with partially devoured corpses.   All the while, the overarching mystery of whether Adam was legit or not dovetailed smoothly with a monster of the week story tinged every so lightly with a hint of mythology - turns out ghouls can taste demon blood, and Sam lost quite a bit of it.  Has he been weakened?

The genius was revealing that while Sam and Dean did have a brother, they never actually met the real boy - instead, they were hanging out with the ghoul who had killed him some time ago while on a revenge trip against poppa John Winchester.   A dreary family reunion custom carved for Supernatural fans.  At the end of the day, it didn't matter whether introducing a new brother was a good idea or not because, yeah, he was already dead.

i luv this epeisode, one of the best in my opinion, especially the twist, although i was a bit disappointed when i found out that that was really their brother and he died. well i guess the twist was needed, to keep the story balanced. all i can say is i can't wait for the next up coming episodes because i think it keeps getting better and better.

Yes, it did matter, Jon. And I absolutely hated it.

But the point is, you only have to hate the one episode. No sleepless nights wondering if Jared or Jensen will be replaced by… uh… what's his name? See I forgot him already. ;)

Agreed. It completely railroaded the whole back story to the show, and especially since the kid was already dead, it made absolutely no sense what so ever to bring him in.

    • Jon Lachonis says:

Did it though? I think in a way it added a new layer of humanity to John. I suppose you could look at it either way though.

I was paying more attention to Dean and what he seemed to be feeling-looked like some jealousy that Sam took to Adam so quickly, and was teaching him the ropes. Dean also looked either jealous or pissed (or both) when seeing those normal family pics with John and new kid, baseball and birthday parties…things he and Sammy never experienced with their father.

I was a bit disappointed with the episode- we are so close to the finale that I almost feel it was a wasted episode if the character was NOT going to be around for a few episodes.
