Most films and television series that involve scenes of deserted streets in major cities film at the height of summer, when the days are at their longest, to take advantage of quiet streets to film on, and BBC's second season of is no exception. Filming has started this week in the city of Birmingham, primary location of the BBC's remake of the 1970's series created by Terry Nation, mastermind behind Doctor Who's most famous enemies The Daleks.
The series, showing the struggle of a small group of survivors after a deadly virus wipes out 90% of the planet's population has relocated from Manchester to Birmingham for its second season, and the production crew are taking advantage of the early sunrises around mid-summer in order to shoot deserted street scenes across the city. The show has been filming for several months in various locations in and around Birmingham, but the next few weeks are dedicated to shooting in the city itself, including the scene shown here, with litter strewn across the city after riots caused by mass panic.
Some setups that have been spotted include helicopter shots of the city, and car chases featuring Land Rover vehicles.
Survivors Season 1 will broadcast on BBC America later this year, with Season 2 scheduled to air in the UK on BBC One late this year, as long as the swine flu pandemic doesn't make the broadcast inappropriate
