Susan Boyle from Britain's Got Talent is in the news again following the finale of the show. Boyle lost out to Diversity, an ensemble dance group, and was later hospitalized for exhaustion according to Britain's Got Talent producers.
Susan Boyle shot to stardom after her audition episode on Britain's Got Talent, pulling in over 90 million views on Youtube and according to one of the show's judges, Piers Morgan, becoming the most downloaded woman in history.
After the finale, in which Boyle seemed gracious and praised the dance troupe, she began acting erratically, according to newspapers, and other sources claimed that she'd been angry about the defeat to the point of saying "I hate this show."
A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said,
“Police were called to doctors assessing a woman under the Mental Health Act. The woman was taken voluntarily by ambulance to a clinic. At the request of doctors, police accompanied the ambulance.”
Judge Piers Morgan chimed in Monday morning, defending Susan Boyle by saying,
“Nobody has had to put up with the kind of attention Susan has had. Nobody could have predicted it. She was very tired and hasn’t been sleeping. She has just gone away to have some time to herself and to sleep and eat, doing all the things she hasn’t been able to do in the last week.”
This news has certainly brought into question the intense pressure that is associated with talent shows of this sort that are extremely popular in Britain. Over 19.2 million viewers tuned into the finale and just under four million people voted, 24.9% for Diversity, and 20.2% for Boyle. In light of the results one can't help but wonder if the erratic and allegedly abusive behavior that was reported last week ended up hurting Boyles, who was considered the favorite before last week. If those reports were true, is this breakdown just another sign of the Susan Boyles we haven't seen on tv? You be the judge.
