SyFy and Singer Bring 2012 to TV

December 21, 2012, is a date that has been speculated about for a long time. It’s the end of the Mayan calendar, and many theorists have speculated that this date will mark the end of the world. Of course, it is one among many dates that supposedly hold the end of the world (Y2K, anyone?).

So it’s no surprise that as the date itself draws nearer, it’s becoming more and more of a pop culture focus. The date was a recent subject of Penn & Teller: Bullsh*t! , and 2012, a film starring John Cusack, is set to be released in November.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, SyFy has caught on to that trend too, and has announced plans to create a miniseries based around the projected catastrophe. The series, announced yesterday, will also be produced by Bryan Singer (director of X-Men and Superman Returns). Singer (and his production company Bad Hat Harry Productions), best known on television for being one of the executive producers of House, has previously worked with SyFy on the 2005 miniseries The Triangle.

The as of yet untitled miniseries will be written by Mark Petroni, and has been said to be similar to quest films like National Treasure and The Da Vinci Code, with a “down-on-his-luck author/professor who goes on a worldwide adventure to uncover the mysteries surrounding the Mayan Calendar and the potential apocalypse it seems to have predicted centuries ago. With an unlikely team, he races against time to prevent global catastrophe, and in doing so, ultimately rediscovers his faith in humanity and himself,” SyFy says.

Though disaster shows are sort of becoming the new trend on television now (Jericho, Day One), may this one will be worth a shot. I think I’ll tune in.
