Okay so it's actually not TV, but it's Whedon and Goddard ... close enough. A few years back Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon got together to write a horror film called The Cabin in the Woods, the script would become Goddard's feature film directorial debut. Like most modern horror films, The Cabin in the Woods comes from a place of dark existential questions. What is reality? What if someone else had control of your reality? Take that notion and apply it to every "Cabin in the Woods" horror movie cliche you can think of (Evil Dead, Cabin Fever, etc.) and you have The Cabin in the Woods.
Whedon caught some flack from journos when he jokingly said that The Cabin in the Woods was a horror game-changer, and no one got the joke. However, one of The Cabin in the Woods star, and Dollhouse alum, Frank Kranz would later echo Whedon's not so modest self assessment. "All I know is that at one point I read somewhere that Joss said it was the horror film to end all horror films," Kranz said. "I like that. I think that puts it best. Those are high expectations, but it's pretty out there. It goes for it. It really goes for it, so if it's successful, then I think people will have trouble following in his footsteps." The Cabin in the Woods represents a bit of a saga for the fans that have followed its production. Completed in 2009, The Cabin in the Woods was originally slated for release in early 2010, then that was pushed back a year so the film could be converted to 3D; unfortunately, that delay put it smack dab in the middle of distributor MGM's highly publicized financial woes. The distribution rights were then sold to Lion's Gate in April of 2011. Lion's Gate was thought to be prepping The Cabin in the Woods for a Halloween 2011 premiere, which obviously didn't happen. Given the fact that they have released this official trailer, I'm guessing we can take the April 13th, 2012 release date seriously.
What do you think? Could this collaboration between two of the hottest talents in film and television possibly live up to all of the anticipation? Sound off.
