The Lost Room Headed to Comics - An Interview With the Creators

A week ago, I wrote an article called Looking Back at The Lost Room, where I did just that - took a look back at the fantastic 2006 SyFy series. Little did I know, the timing couldn't have been any better. While there were lots of exciting news that came out of Comic-Con, the one I'm personally most excited about is that The Lost Room will live on - in comic form! Just yesterday, I spoke with creators Christopher Leone and Laura Harkcom to get the details. They were both asked multiple times at Comic-Con if they had anything to do with the article I wrote as a way to lead up to their announcement of the comic, but they didn't. I just happened to write and publish it when I did.

The two made their first foray into comics with We Kill Monsters, which they published through Red 5 Comics. "From the beginning we always wanted to do more with The Lost Room," explains Leone, "but it didn't go on as a TV series. Now it seems like there's a growing fanbase for it, and the Red 5 guys said 'what do you think about doing a Lost Room comic book?' It was perfect because we like them and the publisher too, and it's a way for us to do more stories."

Harkcom echoed his statements. "It was just perfect timing between the growing audience of the show, people rediscovering it and talking about it, us coming off of our first comic and wanting to do another one and the publisher saying 'we'd love this to be your next comic.' Lionsgate, the studio that made the show, was one hundred percent behind it."

Although they are only in the beginning stages of this project, the story ideas are in place as they search for an artist. Said Leone: "We're not at the beginning storywise. It's not like 'okay, what are we gonna write about?' It's just the opposite. There's so many Lost Room ideas that we didn't get to do, so it's more like 'which one are we going to do first? Which one makes the most sense?'" Their hope with the series was to have a new protagonist every season, which would always reshuffle the show. What does that mean for the comic? "We're going with a guy who is the opposite of Joe Miller. Joe's a homicide cop, a good guy. We thought 'what if the next guy who gets the key isn't such a good guy? What if he's actually more of a bad guy?' He's the protagonist, you're gonna root for the guy, but he's not an upstanding citizen." Their goal with the original miniseries was to close Joe Miller's story arc and show us what happened to him and his daughter, but leave the door open to tell more stories that involve the supporting characters. The time for more stories is now here. The secondary characters will return, and even Joe Miller - now an Object himself - may make an appearance.

Their goal is to release the first issue in the spring of next year. Fans of the show who can't get enough Lost Room in the meantime should check out The Collectors, a message board for and by the fans.
