I usually don't care about ratings, but this story had some "interesting" qualities to it that I couldn't ignore...
So it has been posted all over the net today that ABC's Great White Hope To Replace LOST, Flash Forward, sunk even deeper in the ratings, while FOX's Fringe gained ratings with last night's outing. Well let me be the first to say, FREAKING "YESSSSSS!!!!" to Fringe's bounce in ratings, but I have to shake my head at the report of Flash Forward's declining ratings, because that's next to all I have heard about the show.
A friend of mine told me that last night's midseason finale was the best episode yet, then I come online and read about how a reboot in story and ratings are the only chances that Flash Forward has to maintain an audience when it comes back. Now, I don't think that my friend is lying about Flash Forward's 2009 swan song being one of the best episodes to air. I just find it kind of amusing to only hear it from viewers and not the websites, bloggers, or "critics", who only report on the show's declining ratings and nothing about the quality of the show itself.
I remember back in the day where TV Guide would do a special issue about the Best Shows You're Not Watching, a call for people to give critically acclaimed shows like Sports Night, Once and Again, and other countless shows another chance. I guess 'critically-acclaimed' was the PC term for saying that a show was faltering and was on their way to being cancelled. I kind of wish the term came back in some shape, way or form, because the TV landscape could use a shot of optimism in its arm. Maybe a case of optimism, instead...
I haven't watched Flash Forward since its fourth episode, but I was hoping to get some good feedback for me to come back for more. But the show's ratings slumps casted an eclipse over my judgment to the point that I had to ask myself: why bother?
So what about you guys? Do you feel that once a show doesn't perform well in the ratings that it's a done deal? No matter how good the show gets later on?

the last episode was full of clichè, some very stupid plot twist, like the restaurant situation, the conference and the worst of all, the ambulance kidnapping, that you can see miles before it happen.
ff is written very bad, with some of the bad quote i have ever heard, like “i’m supergay”.
then again, the iranian woman is just but irina derevko, the situation simon/fbi is a rip-off of sloan/cia and the bigger segret (as told from iranian woman) it’s just another rambaldi thig.
they are just copying, in the mediocre way possible.

I have to agree with Leo completely. I’m not sure what your friend is smoking, but last night’s ep was one of the worst yet, if not the worst of the series. How in god’s name did Fiene’s character become a big shot at the FBI, when all of his decisions are the stupidest possible, and he flies off the handle on a regular basis like a teenager on pcp? If this is him sober, he must have been the biggest prick on Earth back when he was drinking. Bloggers and critics aren’t talking about the content of the show because they, like you, stopped watching it a long time ago, and rightly so. As of last night, I’m in the same boat as them. I’m sorry, everything that happened in the last ep was pure cliche` trash. I’m sick of the infighting, I’m sick of the forshadowing events in which the characters might as well be winking at the camera to make sure the audience is aware they just dropped a none-too-subtle hint that trouble was afoot, characters continually making decisions that make no sense whatsoever given their past choices, and horrible horrible HORRIBLE dialogue like “I’m supergay.” No hun, the garbage script you’re reading from is “supergay,” and I’ve reached my superlimit.

Flashforward is dying before our very eyes, and it is an agonizing slow death at that. I think the writers are too obbsessed with trying to manufacture ah-ha moments, and not paying attention to the central promise of the show: the flashforwards, So far, there isn’t a single entertaining or interesting flashforward. The blackout itself was interesting, but the results have been mundane. One would have hoped that the flashes would have been compelling foundations for character stories, but so far only the person who didn’t have one has been interesting to watch.

i’m still enjoying FlashForward. Sure, it does have cheesy moments, but it’s cheesy good fun. Sure, Mark might not be acting rationally, but that’s understandable, considering this woman seems to know all about him and his murder of Demetri. I still love the show, and I hope to god it’s not cancelled.
And “I’m supergay” was indeed a pretty awful line. But that doesn’t mean that all of the dialogue is awful. It’s not.
Hey Mark, here's an article over on Io9 that is nothing but actual viewers giving their thoughts on the "content" of the show, specifically the midseason finale. *Spoiler Alert* It's 99.9% negative. The discussions are mature and insightful, and the points brought up are spot on. It's a good read if you really want to find out what actual viewers think about this show.

It’s not just the writing, the acting is really bad on FF. When are they going to stop thinking British actors are better? It’s the Emperor’s new clothes.
I think you meant SPORTS NIGHT.

Thanks, Chase. I will correct it immediately.

I think one of the problems with FlashForward was that the bar was set too high by LOST, and ABC advertised it in a way that it couldn’t live up to. People therefore gave up on it too early, but the show has really come to its own in recent weeks. The Spring season is going to be a lot better, becausee it will have more meat to it, and less filler.
