The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus Spills His Guts on Season 2

Kevin Fitzpatrick October 14, 2011 2

The Walking Dead returns for season 2 this Sunday on AMC, and series star Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) has his crossbow hitched and ready for more. We recently had a chance to speak to the former Boondock Saints actor on his Walking Dead character, and what new developments Daryl might shamble toward for season 2!

For those not familiar with the character, The Walking Dead‘s first season introduced Norman Reedus’Daryl Dixon in third episode ‘Tell It to the Frogs’as a competent (if mildly redneck) hunter, and younger brother to racist Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker), himself last seen handcuffed to a rooftop in Atlanta. Both Dixons represent original creations for AMC’s The Walking Dead, though comic series creator Robert Kirkman has previously expressed interest in adapting the Daryl Dixon character into the ongoing Image comics series.

So where then might The Walking Dead season 2 take Daryl, with no comic source material to draw from? Reedus observes as Daryl spends more time with the survivors, ‘His attitude is changing. He feels wanted, when before he wasn’t wanted at all.’Certainly the spectre of Merle will be hanging over him as Daryl slowly opens up to his new surrogate family, but his past may weigh more heavily on the hunter’s mind:

‘There will be some things revealed about Daryl’s childhood, his family situation that are really depressing. You’re going to see why he sticks with Merle, why he needs him. There were certain elements of abuse he had growing up, so you’ll see some of the reasons why he’s so connected to [his brother]‘

The Walking Dead - Daryl DixonReedus tells us that upcoming episodes will utilize flashbacks to flesh out the character’s backstory, but season 2′s new additions will also bring out new aspects of Daryl Dixon. As the group of survivors come upon the comic-adapted Hershel Greene’s farm, Daryl finds his trust issues rising once more: ‘Daryl doesn’t trust anybody. As soon as new characters are introduced, Daryl wants to throw down, see what they’re made of. ‘ Eventually Reedus believes Daryl will find some commonality with the patriarch of the Greene family, noting ‘Hershel’s an old country boy, I think he can relate to that.’

Be sure to catch Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon when The Walking Dead season 2 arises this Sunday night, October 16th on AMC with the 90-minute premiere ‘What Lies Ahead.’
