Of the many reasons why a person should watch Nat Geo’s documentary series One Strange Rock, the fact that there is a female cast giving their own perspectives should be one of them. All three cast members are astronauts and have a very interesting amount of insight into the show and have their own stories that are worked into the series in order to show and tell just what they’ve seen and give the audience a chance to experience it. The show, hosted by Will Smith, is essentially a look at our up close and from the outside, marveling at what it takes to keep this place running and what a beautifully self-contained system it is.
In many respects this is another documentary showing the wonder of the world we live on throughout 45 different countries as it allows people to take a look at how really amazing this world is. In doing so however it continues to show just how much we really don’t know about our world despite the teachings that are given to us as children. As we grow up and start taking things for granted we tend to forget the wonder and the awe that we used to look at the world with as children. This ten-episode documentary is designed to remind people just what is there to be marveled at and why it’s so important to remember just why this world is worth more than we take it for during our regular day. To think that we forget just how much beauty there is in the world by growing up and putting our heads down is kind of disturbing.
The stories of these three women and the perspectives they share are meant to instruct people and entertain them at the same time. One Strange Rock is meant to show people just how unique our planet is in the solar system and how much of an oddity it is considering that out of so many other planets it is the only one that has the right kind of conditions that can harbor life and don’t need any further regulations in order to sustain it. There’s no doubt going to be a bit of warning, maybe a cautionary tale that mankind is the only race that can save or continually damage this wonderful planet but that seems par for the course. What we have is something we need to treasure and continually discover is worth the effort of keeping in one piece.
Again some might see this documentary as being just like any other but there are differences here and there that set it apart and make it worth watching. If nothing else it will be an entertaining story of our world and just why it is so unique in the solar system and why we are lucky to have it. That seems like something worth watching since it has a lot to do with being proud of the place we call home and invested in its future.
