I will admit, I have been a huge fan of Andy Samberg for a long time now. Even before SNL launched his star into the stratosphere, I was obsessed with a pilot for a show called AWESOMETOWN on Fox, that featured Samberg and his Lonely Island buddies doing sketches and musical bits. It was insane, and irreverent, and everything the star would come to be known for. Well, it is that very style of humor Samberg brings to his new comedy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and if you haven’t given it a chance yet, you have no idea what you are missing.
In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Andy Samberg plays Detective Jake Peralta, who may be unprofessional and a bit wacky, but who seems to always get the job done, somehow. Opposite of him is actor, Andre Braugher, as Captain Ray Holt, the straight laced captain who gets easily annoyed by Jake’s out-of-the-box thinking. Half the fun of the show is seeing just how well these two play off each other. Samberg is that permanent kid state he is always in, and Braugher is the guy who never smiles or laughs. It is a dichotomy you have seen on TV before, but I cannot recall the last time it worked as well as it works on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Even outside of Samberg, from Terry Crews to Chelsea Peretti, the whole cast is brilliant, and brings a different aspects of humor to the show. I know there is a LOT of good stuff on Tuesdays this year, but if you are missing Brooklyn Nine-Nine, you are missing out on a real treat.
