What's to Come in Season 3 of True Blood

"It's based on the books, but it's not a literal adaptation of the books. I'm doing what I think is the best way to turn that story into a television show. Also, if I just stuck to the books, there would be no surprises. You could go pick up the books anywhere and know exactly what was coming. So personally, I don't see any benefit of making a carbon copy of the books for TV," said True Blood creator Alan Ball to TV Squad shortly before the airing of the show's second season finale.

"I think a book and a television show are two different mediums. If I were to follow the books, it would be all about Sookie, because Sookie narrates the story, and the other characters would rarely even show up. Jason would come into the bar and hug her in an attempt to make people think he loves his sister so he can pick somebody up. Tara wouldn't even have existed until this season, and she'd be white. Lafayette would be dead."

The adaptation of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels has turned out well for HBO, as True Blood is their most-watched program since The Sopranos. And unlike what Ball said, the show is following the series fairly closely; elements from each book are placed within the season. The second book, Living Dead in Dallas, featured the maenad Maryann, just like the second season of the series did. Sookie even removes silver from Eric in both the book in the adaptation. Author Charlaine Harris also made a cameo appearance in the second season finale, "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'."

Of course, the story has been changed drastically (and in my opinion, for the better) from the novels. As Ball stated, Lafayette was dead at the beginning of the second novel, and there are many various differences regarding Maryann -- in the novels, she kills everyone at the sex party, expect for Tara.

But taking into mind the cliffhangers left from the end of season two, it's possible to possibly draw comparisons from the third book of the series, Club Dead, and make predictions about what's to come.

In the third novel, Bill is taken hostage by Lorena, who fans of the TV show know as his maker, a sadistic woman with fiery red hair, under the command of the Vampire King, Russell Edgington (who Ball has confirmed will be in the third season). However, since Lorena appeared for the first time in the second season (as opposed to the third book), perhaps she will not be the perpetrator after all. It's still a very likely possibility, however, given the introduction of the character and her open-ended departure.

Of course, the third novel brings something that I'm sure most True Blood fans do not want to see realized: the break-up of Sookie and Bill. The two end their relationship at the end of the third book after she discovers his infidelity with Lorena, and the two do not get back together for the rest of the series, though they remain friends. Hopefully, this is one aspect of the series (like Lafayette's death) that does not come true.

Season three of True Blood will most likely premiere next summer. It's going to be a long, long wait until then.

I understand some of the changes Alan Ball made but I truly do NOT understand why he focused so much on the Maenad? It was not a good storyline having the entire town under her spell. I was so annoyed by the egg and the Vessel/tree! The best part of the season was the Maenad dying. I was also annoyed that the storyline was DEAD IN DALLAS not Blacked Eyed in Bon Temps! Dead in Dallas should have been more focused on the Fellowship and Dallas, Not the Maenad!!!

I really hope he doesn’t mess up Club Dead? the first season was great and stayed true to the books with a little twist here and there (Tara & Lafayette) I loved that he kept Lafayette alive (great Characters)and my visual of these great characters came to life…Eric, Bill and Skokie are exactly what I Imagined!

    Question to Alan Ball:

You didn’t bring Bubba to the storyline because you weren’t sure how to do it without it looking cheesy.

An entire town under a spell and a sacred Egg isn’t cheesy?

Summer will get here sooner than we all think and the show will be back on. I am looking foward in watching the third season. It is sad that sookie and bill break up, but maybe there is something better out there for sookie.

All I have to say is to all you people complaining and saying "I won't watch the show" Don't and shut the hell up already.

It IS NOT the book, stop comparing it to the book!

Personally, I like the show MORE than the book, and whatever Ball wants to do with HIS adaptation is fine with me.

i agree with Amanda, this is HBO not paper back. To all of you who will not watch if Ball does not write his script word for word out of the novels you know you will tune in just to have something to complain about so shut up already

I have not read the books, so I don't know what happens in them. I like Bill and Sookie together. I hope they don't break-up, but if they do I will still watch the show to see what will happen next. To all those who read the books, the show is NOT the book. If you want an example then read Eragon (if you have not already) and then watch the movie. They go together, but the movie is missing important details that they would have needed if their were going to make the sequel Eldest. That just proves that just because it's in the book, doesn't mean it will be put into the show/movie. The people who write True Blood is not the author of the Sookie Stakhouse series, so their WILL be differences. If you like the book better fine, but don't say you won't watch the show because of that. Be a true fan and see what the director has in store for the show.

I just adore Bill the Vampire, but I hope they get back together ultimately. Bill loves Sookie unconditionally and keeps her grounded. Eric loves Sookie for entirely selfish reasons, not considering what Sookie wants or desires.

I truly hope the show dives head on into Sookie's feelings of betrayal and infidelity. Life's tough and your loved one isn't always faithful… Especially if he/she feels that he/she had no other choice. That's life. I think they should break up, and Sookie should should explore Eric from head to toe…. Literally.

I'm also hoping for ongoing seasons… I am excited for future Where's to enter the picture, and said romances to be explored.

Regardless, I'm a huge fan of both the books and the show. I can't wait until season 3… and I can't wait for book 10…. I love how the seasons are basically following the books, and I truly look forward to a long running show… At least 10 seasons! Great stuff!!!!

Awwwwww Bill's not ugly. I have to admit when I started watching I didn't think he was as attractive as they were making him out to be, but his personality and love for Sookie makes him gorgeous. Not to mention that without the make-up making him look older and well….dead, he is a very very handsome man. He's the type of vamp to fall in love with. Eric on the other hand, is pure sex-a-licious but only in character. He's the type of vamp to have fun with. Lots and lots of fun.

I would like to see alot more of Eric. i loved how his character is coming out in the books. besides if the show expands from more than just sookie then maybe we will get plenty of more seasons to come.

I really like Bill and I hope that Charlaine him a new opportunity to be with Sookie so she can say exactly which of them wants to be. I think Eric is a manipulator and has been manipulating her all the books. I do not think his love for her is as large as that of Bill … He is always there when she needs it, even though she hates, despises and do not want to see. Besides, if he were as rat, why not gone already after 6 books? It's too long time! If he did not love Sookie and was gone? Nothing holds it next to her and Eric is much more powerful than him. Bill knows that he has no chance with Sookie if Eric is with her and yet there it is … You think that

I think that the show is great…. I decided to read the books figuring that I'll see whats ahead in the books…. but I found that not everything is the same. But I like the fact that there are two different stories; in the show Bill seems to love Sookie with all his might and Eric is just trying to get in her pants, but I also like the books where Bill seems to be an asshole and Eric seems to really love Sookie. I mean I know its different but think of it this way…. your seeing what would happen if things turned out differently…. you can always read the books and know whats gonna happen but what if Bill and Sookie stay together…. What if Eric is still the bad guy just trying to steal Sookie from Bill…. I don't mind it.. I love both the books and the show, and besides, the show is only the adaptation of the books. So maybe Ball just wants to show us that there can be a different story besides the one you read.

If AB does not make Eric and Sookie get together, i will be REALLY mad. How can you stick with the same couple for so long??!! You have to mix it up, We're all so tired of Bill and Sookie — so boring!! It's like eating oatmeal every day for two years. WE'RE DONE WITH THE BILL/SOOKIE THING. Move on!! Especially because Eric is WAY freaking hotter, better actor, and him and Sookie have better chemistry!! You're sitting on a gold mine AB! BIG mistake Alan B. if you just continue to ride the Sookie/Bill wave. You will lose a lot of fans…

P.S. the only TV couple that can stay together and get away with it is Coach Taylor and Mrs. T on Friday Night Lights…DO NOT try the same thing on True Blood…

While I must admit to having an extreme bias towards Eric, over Bill, I have to say – in all honesty – that the main reason I would be opposed to Bill and Sookie remaining together throughout the third season would be that it would COMPLETELY alter the storyline.

I read the books before the show came into existence, and while I do admit that I actually enjoy, and sometimes prefer, the changes Ball decided to make to the series, this one change would completely kill it for me. Considering that a vast majority of the plot-line from Book/Season Three onward depends upon the fact that Sookie and Bill are no longer together, and focuses largely on her relationship with not just Eric, but also Quinn and to a lesser extent Alcide, leaving these two together would be a drastic alteration, and I really can't see how it could be pulled off.

Aside from that, avoiding the breakup would cut back drastically on the level of drama!! Not only are the dynamics of Bill and Sookies relationship becoming stale, and even stilted, but consider all of the drama we would be missing if they didn't break up! At the end of the ninth and most recent novel, we still don't know which of the vampires she will end up with! We still don't know if she is genuinely in love with Eric, or if it is only because of their being blood-bonded thrice-over! And it's implied that Sookie is no longer sure about whether or not she could possibly love Bill again! All of that drama is just a goldmine waiting to be picked at!

If Ball decides to omit the break-up, he's making a bad decision for a few reasons. A) Fans of the novels will most certainly be irked, and may decide not to watch the show any longer. I have to admit myself that I would stay with it, but only to see just how the hell the plotlines will work afterwards. B) The plot would suffer dramatic changes, which may or may not be possible to make work in the long run. C) So much potential for drama would be lost!!

However, since this is a drama series, and the end of Sookie and Bill provides many more dramatic options, and in light of the series piqued attention to Eric and their implications that his feelings for Sookie are more than lustful, keep me confident that Ball will make the right decision! Besides, I'm not sure how Harris herself would feel about such drastic alterations, and it seems she has at least a fair say in what happens to the show.

So here's hoping, and waiting impatiently for the next season!!

  43. Carrie says:

I have not read the books – but I know of the storyline in them. I DON'T care if in the books Eric and Sookie are together whatever etc.

In the SHOW Bill and Sookie are meant to be together – and they belong together. Their love is true and honest, and Bill will do anything for her and Eric would never come close to how Bill feels about Sookie. Bill is very naturally handsome and NOT boring in any way.

Maybe Eric will change in the future, but nevertheless he has to go through severe changes in order to come close to being the good man Bill is.

And in the show, Sookie can choose between Eric who is selfish, arrogant, controlling, and will not likely show unconditional love towards her, sure fun, but that's it. Then there is Bill, who loves her unconditionally, would die for her, shows her his love and protects her; and while she loves Bill too, Eric had to trick her to taste his blood in order to even get her any where near being interested in him, and it is also not real anyways.

People should not force the books on the show, as it is an ADAPTION – not page by page TV version – REMEMBER THAT !

    • Jamie says:

Also remember that True Blood wouldn’t exist without Charlaine Harris! So her fans have every reason to be a little anoyed!

Season 1 was great, season 2 sucked and I cant wait for season 3!

I have always been Team Bill but Team Eric is looking better to me now that we have a visual(ALEXANDER SKARSGARD)

The books are great but its like I'm reading the books all over again with a different ending…I like the change!

Hated the Meanad- glad she's dead!

    • Jessie says:

If you really knew anything about the storyline of the books, most likely you would rethink your comments on how Bill is clearly better for Sookie and how her relationship with Eric is based only on him having tricked her into consuming his blood. There is much, much more to it than Bill being a good guy (which is another comment you would probably rethink having read the books). And it is made very clear that there is much more to Eric's feelings for Sookie than just (blood)lust.

And Jamie makes a point. Since there was already an established following for the books before the series was made, some consideration has to be made as to what would be best for not only the fans of the show, but of the books, and most certainly for what Charlaine Harris herself intended the series (regardless of if it is the TV or book series) to be like.

    • Sara says:

Bill's betrayals leads Sookie to dump Bill. She loves him, but she still dumps him because she is a wise, strong woman. That's the main difference between the books and the show in my opinion…in the books she is a much stronger woman.

  44. Carrie says:

I have not read the books – but I know of the storyline in them. I DON’T care if in the books Eric and Sookie are together whatever etc.
And in the show, Sookie can choose between Eric who is selfish, arrogant, controlling, and will not likely show unconditional love towards her, sure fun, but that’s it.

The books are great but its like I’m reading the books all over again with a different ending…I like the change!

Hated the Meanad- glad she’s dead!

im reading the books and idk i think sookie should stay with bill cuz personally i like bill and event hought eric is freakin awesome dosent mean he should get sookie. i dont care if it would change too much i think it would be almost a whole new adventure even thought that has down falls too. so if there was a way to keep bill and sookie together and not change the story alot that would be the best.

  49. Wanda says:

Sookie can't stay with Bill, it would be too boring. Eric's way more fun! I wouldn't expect Sookie and Eric to hook up in the third season but hopefully we'll get some more tasted dream sequences.

  51. Kasi says:

I really have mixed feelings about Sookie not being with Bill anymore. I don't know if I'm very much up for that change. And Lafyette, if he dies, that'd truly be devastating. I love him!

It's a known fact that Alan Ball has a soft-spot for Bill and cannot see the complexity of Eric, but if he continues to make Eric a complete a-hole instead of Bill I'm going to stop watching the show after season 3 if there is no Sookie and Eric chemistry.

There is a LOT of drama that lays ahead… Yes, we all understand the Sookie/Bill vs. Sookie/Eric debate, but there's sure to be a break between this triangle in the show for the other love/lust Sookie interests…. and for the book readers, I'm sure you're just as excited as I am for the emerging Alcide and Quinn. I'm very excited at the thought of which direction the show will take with these characters. And I'm even more excited to think of who will be playing these hotties!! I wouldn't mind seeing Quinn and Dawson emerge a little sooner than later…

I love that the show is different from the books. The boooks are great but the show is a different experience. Alan Ball is doing a fantastic job.

I have read all the books and love them and the series. Now I do think Bill and Sookie should break up in the series and Sookie should get with someone else. I just think it would be better. Now if they will I have no idea. Sometimes I think they won't cause Bill asked Sookie to marry him but I hope they will. Sometimes I think the actors have a part in the story line. If thats the case I can bet money they won't break up. Mainly because Bill and Sookie are together in real life. I will be very disappointed if they don't break up and it screws up season 4. The actors are perfessionals and they need to act accordingly because it shouldn't mess with their personal life.

I've read all the books and I love the show…I would NOT love the show if it were a carbon copy of the books. I do think it is incredibly important, though, that the show MUST follow the story-line of dumping Bill and turning to Eric. As I read the books I can't help but keep Bill in the back of my mind at all times…comparing his feelings for Sookie to those of Eric…comparing the two relationships and constanty asking which vampire is best for her. The question was raised at the end of the most recent book about which vampire truly loves her…I will be very, very happy if it ends up being Bill. I hope that the show follows the book…but I hope that in the end she ends up with Bill after taking a "detour" with Eric (and Quinn).

Gah!…i will be so pissed if they leave bill and sookie together!!! eric is soo much better than bill and hes the one thats suposed to end up with sookie.I will deffinatly stop watching the show if they change the story line that much!

  67. xxxxxxxxx says:

bill sucks majorly and i hate him, as would most people if he was actually portrayed correctly, unlike Eric who NEVER treats Sookie bad… being true to Chalaine Harris is important, like someone already said there would be no true blood if it weren't for her books. Oh and in response to someone who said "he ultimately loves her" he doesn't!!!!!

  68. evelyn says:

i think bill and sookie should stay together no matter what people think i am i really big fan of true blood and you guys are just making a big deal. also because you think he is ugly and he is not. ih he was ugly why is sookie going out with him in real life so think about it guys.:)

  69. Mary says:

I'm not sure where Sam McPherson is getting the facts upon which he bases his assumption that most True Blood fans do not want to see the break-up of Sookie and Bill. From everything I've heard and read about the show, most fans want to see Alan Ball stay true to the books, which means the story revolves around Sookie and Eric, not Sookie and Bill. Bill should fade into the background – he's boring! Hopefully Alan Ball will "right the ship" going forward. He's already strayed too far from the books. The Season 2 Finale was a fiasco.

  70. ash429 says:

I wish they wouldnt generalize and say most dont want to see Sookie and Bill break up…I certainly do

  71. ash429 says:

Bill in my opinion, is not a good man. He isnt even a man anymore He has manipulated Sookie time and time again through his lies, on the show and the books. You cant bring up Erics manipulations without bringing up Bills, cant mention Eric killin Royce without mentioning Bill killing the Rattrays and Uncle Barltett. Eric has done not one thing on the show that Bill hasnt done, not one thing. Just in different ways. Eric is not evil, and Bill gave Sookie his blood the second night. You dont think that influenced her feelings? And if she had taken the blood the Rattrays drained that he offered her the first night, What would you say to that? Dont you think that's why he offered it to her? Bill has an ultimate plan, you obviously dont get that. Eric tricking her into drinking a couple drops of blood, sorry dont care. Sookie was attracted to him before that. You could see it in the church, and even the first time she met him. Bill and Sookie together the whole time would become sooo dull, and many others agree. Alan Ball is making an adaptation, but in case you havent noticed he sticks to the main plot. He wont leave out Eric and Sookie. The books came first not the show. YOu just dont want Bill and Sookie to break up.

  72. ash429 says:

Bill loves Sookie but it doesnt change what he has done. Sookie has forgiven him but i doubt will ever be in a relationship with him again. She doesnt love him like he loves her.

  73. ash429 says:

YOu like the show more than the books because so far Sookie is with Bill. Bet you will be changing your tune later on and be complaining just like the others. The show is based on the books, of course people are going to compare it. Not everyone wants Sookie with Bill. Get over that.

  74. ash429 says:

You are pretty rude. And i bet you will be complaining if Sookie and Bill arent together.

  75. Annette Jones says:

I have read all 10 of the books and Sookie is much better off with Eric. She brings out the Human in him and we see a totally diferent Eric when he is with Sookie . So I hope they don't keep Sookie with Bill. Got to Love a Tall Viking hahahah!

  76. Annette Jones says:

I think the books need to be combined because if they don't the unaging vampires will start to age !

  77. Koda08 says:

I love the way you did season two. In season three dont break sookie and bill up because its about their love and how they overcome so many bad things. Then it would be just werid how he tried to save her life in the first season, almost killing himself, then end their relationship like the book. You sholudnt do that at all!!!!!!!!!!! Its great how you kept Lafayette alive. He is the funny man in the show and he keeps my attention in the show and Tara as well. They are great in the show together. Eric should find someone else to love (like Lafayette) and billl and sookie stay together.

  78. Tether7 says:

I will not stop watching the show either way, but I hope Sookie and Eric get together.

  79. Lcr0825Lynn says:

Most True Blood fans want to see Sookie end up with Erick as do I!!! and she does in book 10….but in book four they have sex for the first time…Bill is a liar and worthy of Sookie

  80. I found your post in google that was very good thanks.
