Will Fans of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Get Closure?

terminator-sarah-connor-chroniclesOur favorite TV Addict broke news today that all might not yet be lost for fans Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  Despite having a very loyal following in the U.S. and getting good ratings overseas, The Terminator TV series came to its demise after it's second season ended earlier this year.  The reasons for the cancellation, ultimately, came down to money, and The Sarah Connor Chronicles was more expensive to produce than Dollhouse, and therefore got the drop.

Daniel (the TV Addict) interviewed Thomas Dekker (John Connor himself) at the Annual FanExpo in Toronto over the weekend, and when asked if there had been any talk of continuing the story in another format, such as a comic book, Dekker responded,

"They’ve spoken about doing a TV movie. Well, not a TV movie, but kind of like a direct-to-DVD movie [Think: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's THE PLAN]. Obviously it’s difficult because the show is based on a movie and they just had one come out, so it’s kind of hard to make a movie with our show because everyone has kind of forgotten about us. But they’re hoping, at least when I spoke to [Producer] James Middleton that’s where they are with it."

If that news doesn't get your blood pumping, then you're not a true fan of this show.  While we'd all love to see what season 3 of the under-appreciated show would have brought, at least a direct-to-DVD movie, (or TV movie) would give some closure and allow fans to leave the series without feeling like they'd wasted two seasons of their time.

Of the unrealized season 3 Dekker had this to say,

"I loved the story and I knew where the third season was going and I thought it was just so cool. I love that Josh [Executive Producer Josh Friedman] had the balls to make everybody kind of wait, and be patient. Unfortunately I guess people really weren’t that willing to be patient." Thomas further elaborated, "I’ve divulged too much in the past [so I have to be careful as to not piss off Josh] but I mean it was going to be really interesting because there were questions in the future like is Sarah Conner at the age she would be in the future or is she already dead? I know which one that is, and it was the more interesting of the two to me. Plus what is she doing in the past? Also my sort of relationship with Allison and finding Cameron would play a large part in the season, do I go with the robot I know or do I go with the human that doesn’t know me? The fact that Danny Dyson became a very important part of it was also very exciting because it harkened back directly to the second film."

It seems like a direct-to-DVD option for The Sarah Connor Chronicles seems a little like wishful thinking on the part of Dekker and James Middleton.  It's not that we don't want this to happen, because it would be more than cool for Fox to do this, but it's also not something we've seen them do in the past.  Regardless, if networks want fans to continue to stick around for their serial series then they need to come up with a way to give closure to fans who invest their time and energy into watching these shows.

Oh God, please, please let this be true! I was a latecomer to the show but I absolutely adored the season 2 finale. It blew me away. I wished it had been able to continue. I will buy this DVD, Fox, just tell me when it's going to be released.

Yes, I need more TSCC. It is pathetic that McG had all that money for special effects and big name movie stars, and he still could not come up with a plotline or characters as interesting as TSCC.

Fox has nothing at all to do with this. It is a division of Warner Brothers Entertainment called Warner Premiere that would be involved in a direct to DVD movie. If the season 2 DVDs do well enough, maybe we'll see one.

I hope Warner Bros does continue the show. I love TSCC!! I was so disappointed and saddened when Fox canceled the series. The WB needs to see that the fans want more TSCC, so buy season 2 on DVD and Blu-ray on September 22nd. If we get good sales here in the US, we will get TSCC back!

I'll buy anything related to TSCC, because this show is best ever for me. But I would prefer the full season 3, rather than just a DVD movie.

    Still wish to save TSCC.

Once again a network in this case the CW has tried and failed with it’s FRIDAY switch of what seems to be turning out to be the best season of Smallville yet. Sorry but most Smallville viewers weren’t CW Friday night viewers and just because you put a major show on that night doesn’t mean it will change. All it means is that the Powers that Be will probably decide to scrap another good series because of idiotic programming.

Same is true with Fox and their Friday choice for Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles a show that in it’s 2nd season was really gaining it’s legs but once again viewers didn’t switch nights and it was cancelled leaving the Brothel/Spy entity known as Dollhouse in order to keep it’s creator happy.

Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles died a horrible death and I’m sorry I hate to see Smallville fall to the same fate because of the executives decisions to play multiple chairs with shows that got good ratings on their original nights

Really, if they don't plan to give an ending to a show, don't bother make it! You don't screw around your viewers' head like that. Even if it's just a few episodes, we viewers deserves a closure! I respect your show, you respect my feeling.
