I will admit, I was pretty excited about The Goldbergs. The new show from ABC about the family that loves through all its dysfunction. What is funny is, there was a certain ABC family I used to adore spending time with as well, and it seems people are beginning to draw comparisons between those two families. I am, ofcourse, talking about The Goldbergs, and the family from The Wonder Years. Trust me, in this case, this is not an insult at all. As a matter of fact, the connections have me even more excited about The Goldbergs, and just how good it could end up being.
If you watched the premiere Tuesday night, it was safe to say you could see The Wonder Years influence. Just a certain degree of retro, mixed in with lots of whimsy. I guess, even more accurately, I would describe it was a mix between The Wonder Years and Malcolm in the Middle. I know that is a hefty compliment, but I am okay giving it. Outside of Brooklyn 99, don’t expect too many shows to be as funny (or at times, heartwarming) as The Goldbergs this TV season.
I guess the fact that I grew up in the 80’s with an insane family only makes me like this show that much more, because I feel like I am watching my own youth.
Tune in to the Goldbergs on Tuesday night at 9:00 on ABC.
