The second season of Flight of the Conchords has soared to DVD. The half-hour HBO comedy, starring Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie as Jemaine Clemaine and Bret McKlegnie, ended season two in March, and finally was released on DVD yesterday, much to my excitement.
The cover art, as pictured right, features the band, instruments in hand, in flight, a pun on their name. In an interesting twist, though, the duo only appear on the plastic slipcover -- the actual DVD case is only the background, with the title and the catchphrase "Born to folk."
The inside of the case, however, is what's important. I'm talking about the two DVDs, which contain all ten episodes of the show, plus features. The episodes are unevenly distributed between the discs; the first disc holds six episodes, while the second only holds four. The difference is made up by special features on the second disc.
Some of the special features seem a little dated; a documentary about the conception of the first season seems like it would have been better fit for the first DVD set, but it's still very entertaining. The sharp wit of the boys both on and off the show is most noticeable in the special features (when asked what came first in his music career, Jemaine dryly responds, "Unenployment.")
There's a menagerie of deleted scenes as well, including a rather funny one featuring Bret and Jemaine attempting to book a gig at a "club." The two are hilariously unfortunate; Jemaine instead succeeds in booking a reservation at a restaurant, and Bret's accent only gets in the way of what he's trying to tell the "club." However, I'm glad that many of the other scenes were cut; many are very, very similar to scenes from season one, which include Bret and Jemaine deliberating in a bathroom on how to escape from several women (similar to the episode "New Fans" from season one). Outtakes also appear on the DVD, and they give a bit of a hint into the improvisations used by the cast.
Arj Barker's hilariously irreverent Dave has a series of commercials for his pawn shop on the DVD, which were originally released on the web. They're all kind of the same, but humorously feature the overpriced wares of the store set to Dave's rapping (and the surprisingly catchy jingle "Mohumbai and Sons, we get it done.")
The episodes are mostly the same, but in the few episodes I've watched, there has been at least from what originally aired on HBO. The song "Too Many Dicks (On the Dance Floor)" (in the episode "Unnatural Love") has an extra vocal part from Bret.
All in all, it's a wonderful DVD collection, and is surprisingly not a bare-bones release.
In other Conchords news, the second season soundtrack has a confirmed tracklist. The album, titled I Told You I Was Freaky, will have three tracks in addition to the ten previously released tracks; studio versions of "Rambling Through the Avenues of Time," "You Don't Have to Be a Prostitute," and "Too Many Dicks (On the Dance Floor)" will also be included.
