V 1.12 "Red Sky" Review

V has finally sold me. It was a long, hard sell, but I have to say that after watching "Red Sky," the first season finale, I'm truly happy that V got picked up for a second season. I was fairly content with it with ABC announced it at upfronts, but now, I'm definitely excited, FlashForward or no FlashForward. The characterization for "Red Sky" was top notch, and I honestly can't think of one thing I didn't like about the episode. Well, they refused to show us Valerie and Ryan's baby, one of the biggest cop-outs in history. But other than that, I found V to be a worthwhile watch, and was honestly better than the preceding episode of LOST, at least as far as pulse-pounding octane goes.

I'll get straight to watch we're all thinking: why is the sky red? Anna, angered by the murder of her soldier eggs, decided to up the ante on humanity by having their off-planet ships (who seem a lot closer than they did last time) turn the sky a bright red. Is this just a fear tactic used to get the humans to surrender, or is it some sort of toxin that kills humans? I'm hoping it's the former, because if it's the latter, season two is going to be a lot shorter than thirteen episodes.

But for some characters, season two won't happen. Valerie is one of those who won't be seeing the (red) light of day, after Anna gave her a fatal injection after the delivery of her baby. Of course, this will have some further play in the story, but it seems more and more like Valerie's purpose on the series was to get pregnant and die. Her death really threw Ryan off the deep end, though, and before long, Anna will have him eating out of her hand.

Chad Decker was also instrumental in the story, but not in a good way. His meddling led to the death of Joshua, but he was also able to discover the true nature of the Visitors. Anna seemed to realize this when she met him after her dinner with Tyler, Lisa, and Erica, and she put it in no uncertain terms that he needs the Visitors. Especially if what Joshua said is true and the Vistors gave him an aneurysm.

Lisa's character was fantastic in this episode, and they really played the conflict between her love for Tyler and her love for her Mother in the episode, but it seems her love for Tyler was stronger -- though her actions will definitely leave her with deep regrets, especially after watching her mother's pain at the end of the episode. And with Joshua calling her his queen? I'm expecting some interesting development there.

I'm really cutting this review short and not giving it the justice it deserves, but this episode was definitely the best of the season and left me wanting a season two. A+

The Visitors may be reptiles, rather than insects, but I'll bet the same rule applies: there can only be one queen. I think you're right about this leading to some interesting developments.

I agree with you that V final episode was awesome. Now I am really looking forward to an exciting 2nd season. As much as I enjoyed Flash Forward, V is a much better show with potential. I wrote a comment on another blog for V to make it next season, they need to focus more on the V's, Anna, and Joshua and get rid of Valerie, boring character and horrible story line. When Joshua died, I was like big mistake, good actor and character. But ABC and the writers must have saw the same. Joshua lives. Awesome ending. Other than not seeing the baby, I loved this episode. A+

Now I can tell all my friends who don't watch regularly: something finally happened on "V"! After weeks of build-up, and things almost happening, some big events finally happened.SPOILERS!Now, with Joshua being healed and brought back, I assume all the V's involved in that, including Anna's right-hand man, are Fifth Column. So there are a lot more than the ones caught in the purge that exposed Joshua and the med lab staff. My theory on the red sky: I don't think it's a toxin to kill humans, because that would end the series too quickly. It might be something to make humans more docile, or sterile, or something like that. But what if the V's come from a planet with a red sun? Could this be some sort of terraforming effort?

Ok nobody talking about Marcus. What did he mean by "you are already working for us". And "but we found her"

I agree with you! nice Ep! I already knew they weren't about to show us the baby…I just knew it. Greetings from ARgentina

Just a thought…Red Sky is there simply to block out the sun in order to kill crops and destroy the food chain on earth. As we have seen the V's have their own source of food.. (it seems to be they arent here for food as in the original miniseries) also it could be an additive to the atmosphere to make the environment more comfortable for them.. as considering the size of the second fleet its a decent speculation to say that their Homeplanet is destroyed either through mismanagement or simple over population. and they are looking for a replacement. As far as the experiments.. It seems that while being reptilian/amphibian they also seems to have a caste system engrained in their species similar to insects. So it may be easy to see that maybe Queens are the only members of the race able to procreate.. and Lisa may be the last due to some genetic defect and they are trying to regenerate it using Humans as test subjects. It also seems like 5th Column is against the use of Bliss and the Hivemind… which points to maybe this happening before in the past (i.e. subjgation of another species) and they simply want to stop it. I.E. they move from planet to planet saping them of all useful resources before moving to the next.

I think you forgot to mention the single moment that left me picking my jaw back up off my desk, when Marcus and the med staff finished mending Joshua's wounds, and Marcus smiles at Joshua, saying "Welcome Back."Throughout all his previous scenes, he has been the most mellow and emotionless character. This was emphasized even more when Anna, in anguish, was asking what was happening to her, and Marcus tells her, while still completely emotionless, that she is experiencing her first human emotion. However, when Joshua was healed, Marcus had a genuine looking smile; which makes me wonder, is Marcus Fifth Column?Personally I am most excited to see where this leads, with the development of Joshua calling Lisa his queen a close second.

Marcus brought Joshua back to life to interrogate him about his accomplices. Remember Anna believes that he could not have done it alone. I wouldn't be so quick to declare Marcus a member of the Fifth Column.

  9. Marian says:

Hah! If Marcus would be Fifth Column that would be really intersting and…very unexpected!
