How To Cook Food from Zelda’s Breath of the Wild

If we could cook everything we see on video games it’s safe to say our culinary world’s would be rocked from here back to wherever we happen to land when the fireworks are over. Just to keep it simple though we’ll talk about cooking as it’s seen in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are going to be a few things of course that the real world won’t be able to accommodate such as ‘monster extract’, which exists in the game. That being said though there are plenty of ways to substitute different things that do actually exist in this world so the dish at least looks the way it should.

The cook is actually trying to push his own little book, Eat What You Watch, which is an interesting take on the food world when it comes to emulating video games. One can only imagine what sort of delicacies that might be taken from such venues as Zelda and many other popular games that feature the favorite dishes of the main heroes. So let’s take a look shall we?

Mushroom Risotto over the fire by the lake is a little more labor-intensive than you might think.

There’s a reason why kitchens were invented but in the spirit of cooking like Link from Zelda this is about as close as it gets. The inclusion of goat butter, yes, GOAT butter, is a definite deviation from what you think of as regular. But the fact that goat butter has a very different taste and is what used in video games makes this a little more authentic.

You can actually make an “oven” effect over the campfire as well.

If you’ve cooked outside on a regular basis you might already know this. But placing whatever you’re cooking on a layer of foil that’s set over the fire, not on it but OVER it, and then placing another layer of foil over the food can create the oven effect that you’re going for.

When it comes to the “monster cakes” it’s usually best to bake inside.

This is where you really need to go inside, no matter if this isn’t how Link does it. Baking a cake is not quite as easy to do over a fire as it would be in the kitchen where you can actually attain the heat you need to make the cake rise. With the ingredients you’ll use for this cake, including a Durian, which is a spiky fruit that tastes absolutely crazy and smells worse, you will find that your dessert is a little funky but still delectable. If nothing else you’ll have followed the recipe from the game as much as you possibly can and will have attained a meal right out of a video game. No doubt this is something that hardcore fans would absolutely love.

To be honest I’ve never given much though to eating as the characters in the video games or the cartoons do, because honestly some of their meals look absolutely disgusting. But this looks quite good.
