Mean comments on the internet are making her sad. Wait a minute, are we serious? Yes, yes we are. Weeds star Mary-Louis Parker has recently stated she may just leave acting because everyone has gotten too mean and cruel. Why it seems she is just discovering the cruel callousness of the internet now is beyond me (lest she forget the internet buzzed about her show Weeds, making it far more popular initially), but apparently, it is widespread enough that it is making her consider leaving this field.
Just one quote from Mary pretty much sums up how she feels, and sums up the internet in its entirety:
“The world has gotten too mean for me, it’s just too b****y. All the websites and all the blogging and all the people giving their opinion and their hatred … it’s all so mean-spirited, it’s all so critical. “
She goes on to say more things about how everyone is mean and it is sucking the fun out of what she does, but I also think she needs to understand, she is in an evolution right now, and sadly, for many, being faceless behind a computer is part of that equation. While being an internet writer I can definitely see where she is coming from (here, now you can, too!), the reality is, you need to have tougher skin this day and age or else the slings and arrows will ruin you.
And another thing no one wants to accept. This is not going to ever change, and is just a part of our job now. So we recommend she disconnect from the web and all the trolls and critics, and just keep doing her job to the best of her ability. Jerks are always going to exist, but the true artists manage to look past that and continue to create, regardless.
