White Collar is apparently being "rethought." That's according to creator Jeff Eastin, via his Twitter feed. "Due to the number of complaints, they're considering rethinking the rest of season one," Eastin tweeted Saturday night. "Trying to prevent that." Twenty minutes later, the Tweet was removed.
This comes after Friday night's episode "Free Fall," which ended in a cliffhanger, where it appeared that protagonist Neal Caffrey (played by Matt Bomer) had been betrayed by Special Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay), who had been working with him to solve crimes. The twist ending left audiences shocked. "I'm really hoping that the final scene of the episode was designed to be misleading," said Alan Sepinwall of The Star-Ledger. "Because if it was what it looked like it was, I may be even less interested in the show than I was before."
Eastin was quick to post on his Twitter feed that audiences should not "assume anything you see is what it seems," after taunting audiences with a "Ha ha ha ha ha!"
"Clue: it was set up from the beginning. How does Peter find Neal in the pilot?" he Tweeted. "Peter has always known more than he let on, but he hasn't betrayed Neal."
With his most recent (and recently deleted Tweet), Eastin has insinuated that the show, which returns in January, might go on completely differently than originally planned, due to fan backlash of the twist. USA isn't one to usually mess with the content of their shows that much (as far as we know), so there must have been some major complaints being aired, most of them probably directed at the actions of Peter.
"Don't hate Peter," Eastin pleaded to a follower.
What do you think will happen to the show? Did you enjoy the twist at the end of the fall finale? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
Update: "Twitter running 90% positive for the ending. It's the 10% that's got them worried. :)" Eastin tweeted, regarding USA Network. Let's hope that USA knows that 10% is not enough for a show-altering decision to be made.
I was actually excited that there was a twist. Of course I wonder how it’ll all turn out in the end (because I like their pairing), but I find it intriguing and am looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

I definitely didn’t see that coming! I really don’t want it to work out that Peter was planning this huge betrayal-type thing from the start. Seems too ooc for him.
I really hope it doesn’t go that way. I don’t want Peter to turn out to be a bad guy. I really enjoy this show and the dynamic between Peter and Neal is my favorite part of it. If it does turn out that that it was a setup, it would change the whole tone of the show and honestly, I don’t know if I’d even watch any more.
I like the relationship between Neal and Peter so I hope they don’t make Peter the bad guy. It doesn’t really gell with the character they have presented from the start.

I believe Jeff when he says Peter hasn’t betrayed Neal. So I’m not sure what re-thinking has to happen. Assuming that’s what the 10% are complaining about. Besides, Show comes back in January, so the next ep has to be shot already.

Keep it just the way it is. I like shows that are bold and brazzen enough to try to actually suprise us. Keep up the good work USA and co.

I absolutely LOVED the twist! I really don’t think that Peter was the one betraying Neal, though. I don’t assume Fowler would either. I think it’s KATE that’s gonna betray him! I can’t wait till Jan!
They may be rethinking timeline. If the original idea had been to end with Peter and Kate, then jump ahead a few days, weeks, whatever and keep the audience wondering for a while, the network may we worried that too many people will jump ship before whatever happens is revealed. They may be pushing for the reveal to be earlier than Eastin had planned.

This show was starting to become one of my families favorites along with burn notice and psych. The paring worked. It was fun.
Thinking peter is the “bad guy” made us all decide, if its true, this is a show we aren’t interested in. It was the chemistry that worked.

As an aspiring novelist, I appreciate the ending for taking the audience out of its comfort zone, but I don’t want Peter to be some duplicitous plotter who would be capable of kidnapping Kate — it wouldn’t jive with what we’ve seen of him so far. It’s easier for me to believe Kate got tired of waiting for Neal and wants to take the money and run to start a new life. A shout-out to Jeff Eastin and company: Please don’t break up the band (i.e., Neal and Peter)!

Great show. Big fan of the Fowler twist at the end. Doesn’t seem like many people are touching on that. Obviously there is no way that Eastin would break up Peter and Neal. The entire brodcast of this show was about Neal working under Peter. And let’s all be honest for a second, who was the first person that popped into your mind when Kate told Neal that the man with the ring was an FBI agent? Everyone just needs to be patient and wait for January. But DON’T forget about Fowler!
I think that the comment is being misread. The entire first season has to be completed so my guess is that the re-thinking may have to do with when a second season may air.
The first season episodes have been finished- so I am sure that the comment was taken out of context or misunderstood in some way.

I didn’t even know it was on this week. I thought last week was the start of it’s midseason break. Don’t know that I even care to watch it at this point.
“USA isn’t one to usually mess with the content of their shows that much (as far as we know)”
Not a fan of In Plain Sight, are ya Sam? The original season 2 finale was axed at the last minute, with word leaking out shortly after that season 3 would take the show in a different direction, and the characters were all looking at a big shakeup, especially Grace, the main character. It’s been months, and fans are still fuming at the news. Take a peak at the forum for the show over on IMDB if you need insight into USA’s heavy-handedness.

White Collar is my favourite new show of the season, but what keeps me coming back is the Neal and Peter dynamic, and if that goes I’m afraid that I’ll be going as well. I like drama and angst and love it when curveball are thrown at characters with a tenuous friendship like Peter and Neal’s but a twist of “Peter was the big bad all along” doesn’t make any sense to me, and would ruin what draws me back to the show.
The twist was perfect for a cliff hanger – we’ll just have to wait and see what January and the rest of the season brings. I doubt USA Network is dumb enough to mess with success, but then you never know. I’d hate to think that they’d worry more about the whiny 10% than the rest of us that are willing to watch and see what happens.
That’s my guess too. It was a shocker, but I don’t believe that Peter’s a bad guy — I didn’t believe it even before I saw the tweets. He couldn’t be. I’m very intrigued to see where it will all go.
especially Grace, the main character
Got you series confused a bit here. The main character on In Plain SIght is Mary

Or how about “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”? They’ve changed almost everything about that show, to the degree that I can barely watch it anymore (and won’t after Goren and Eames are gone for good).

I guess I’m in the “whiny 10%” category. If they want to take Peter in that direction, I’m done with the show.
Having Peter seem to be the ‘bad guy’ as a cliffhanger was great. We are all chewing fingernails until January. But having Peter turn out to be the ‘real bad guy’ all along would ruin why we liked the show.
No one likes to watch people we like (real or fictional) get betrayed. And we like Neal and Peter. Neal because he’s everything most of us are not and can never be – sauve, charming, clever, handsome, etc. and we like Peter because is what most of us ‘ordinary people’ could be – hardworking, smart, loyal, decent – if we worked on it.
USA Network – don’t blow it.

For a change, a show comes along that not only is something new and great to watch, but the reason I can’t wait for every show is to see Matt Bomer. Please, please don’t change anything, I loved the twist at the end.
I agree with everyone else. It is the chemistry that makes the show, so Peter better not be a bad guy. I don’t know what else to think, I really liked the show until tonight. I was too shocked.

No way should Eastin alter his original vision. Don’t let the “fans” write the show.

I’m usually not one for cliffhangers, but I addored this ending. I was compeltely thrown for a loop and I loved it. Though I didn’t antictpate Peter being the man with the pinky ring, I’m not convinced that he’s necessarily a bad guy. I have a feeling that he has some good inentions. Maybe Kate’s the problem and Peter’s helping her. Maybe Kate’s in the witness protection b/c of the man who’s after Neil’s loot and Peter’s keeping an eye on her. All I know is, I love Peter. His character is one of my favorites on TV and I love this show. Besides, how can he really be a bad guy if he’s married to Kelly Kapowski?

I was thoroughly shocked by the ending, but once I got over the shock somewhat, I thought it was a delicious twist. Before this cliffhanger, I had wondered if Kate was making Neal think she was being kept away from him in order to double-cross him and have him reveal where he hid his stash so she could steal it. Now I don’t know what to think… but I guarantee you that I will be watching to find out what happens next, and isn’t that the purpose of a good cliffhanger? Oh, and don’t mess with the show!!
Everyone is looking at this with the issue of messing up the friendship of Peter and Neal and how if Peter is bad than that breaks up the group. But what if Peter is recruiting Neal. What if all of this was a way to bring in Neal as a test to see if he could be trusted. What if the twist was that Peter and Neal would be thieves from inside the FBI. I feel its a long shot but at this point who knows?

We didn’t like the ending at all and are seriously considering giving up the show if Peter is the bad guy. There won’t be any trust and the chemistry is what makes this show work. It was an unfortunate risk.
I understand the need for a cliffhanger but why toss him off the cliff? How do you turn back from a free fall? It left us with no reason to look forward to January.

Love this show-hooked from moment one, Neal Caffrey is one helluva character. You can’t not love this guy….as for Peter? was stunned but so intrigued to see where it goes. I like the twist, I want a show to suprise me, leave me guessing, keep me intrigued. There are so many questions with this show-man with the ring, Kate, Neal’s schwag stashed all over the place, just let it play out……betcha we’ll be pleasantly ( and oh so charmingly) suprised.

Just got done watching it again, and I’m seriously thinking that Kate is going to double-cross Neal. But I’m usually about half right on these things. I can’t imagine that Peter’s actually the “bad guy” because like pretty much EVERYONE else has said, it’s the chemistry between him and Neal that makes the show. Just like NCIS, the show is all about relationships, and if you start messing with that, the fans get upset. Remember all the upset fans when Kate Todd was killed off?
So many TV shows are so predictable, I liked the ending of this half of season 1. It’s compelling.
They have obviously set Peter up as a good guy until now, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. The problem with this town [(Los Angeles) and the US in general] is that we have no patience anymore. Instant gratification is needed. Nobody wants to wait to find out what the deal is with Peter/Kate.
Here are my guesses:
1. Kate came to Peter and planned this to show Niel what a life without could be.
2. Peter found Kate in that scene
3. Time – The timeline is off. That “last” scene was earlier. (time is a CHEEP TRICK in a show that doesn’t use flashbacks EVER)
I wouldn’t count out Fowler as the “bad guy.”
There are so many ways to flip the script on that ten second scene, everyone needs to get their panties out of a bunch and calm down. There is no way that Peter is the “bad guy”, he probably isn’t being malicious or ill meaning. So far we haven’t seen any of those characteristics from him.
Remember, this is the same show that had Neil “on the run” only to wind up inside a building with an art theif. Thus nullifying the need for a warrent. Peter is doing something similar, if he’s the one who “Has” Kate.
Neil said “I didn’t let you down” at some point in the next 12 episodes Peter will get to say the same thing to Neil.

I already liked the show, but I thought it got 100% better with the introduction of that twist. I don’t think Peter has “betrayed” Neal. I do think he’s up to something that Neal would probably see as betrayal in the short run, and I think that could make the whole show that much much more interesting. I love the portrayal of Peter so far–he’s smarter than you think he is, every single time–and I want them to keep that up. I want him to continue to surprise me. Neal is just a pretty-boy con artist. Peter is the interesting character for me.

After I got over the initial shocik, I thought it was clever. I see no reason to assume Peter’s the bad guy; this just means he’s smarter than he ever lets on (which we knew) and that the show is going to involve more intrigue than we’ve seen so far–something I’m glad of, because it’d be a shame to waste two such interesting characters (and their talented actors) on a fluff show.

How many times I saw this happening? Creators and producers should NEVER interact with fans online, because it can only end bad.
Are they all really so dumb? A bunch of people posting on a few blogs does not represent all the viewers/fans of a show.
Many viewers/fans don’t even go online and many often go online but never post.
It’s stupid to think that all the White Collar viewers/fans are on twitter.
That said, it would be really great just for once to not screw up a show about two male characters that have chemistry and do stuff together.
What’s next? A crappy angel popping up to make Peter and Neal hate each other?

the first season hasnt finished filiming according to jeffs twitter they finish dec 18th. Personally i loved the twist i hate shows that dont take bold risks and this certainly is one. I honestly think in the short term itll be something neal will see as betrayal and peter will have to work hard to fix those wounds but in long run its going to be peter has been working in conjunction with the FBI as they want something back that neal has in his stash and they no the only way to get it is by using kate to get him to give up where the stash is.

I was seriously shocked, but I wanted to know the ‘what’, the ‘why’ of it! It was interesting, and I was defiantely planning on seeing the next season, regardless. Though I do desperately hope it’s not quite what it seems to be… T-T It’d make me cry to think someone as seemingly upstanding would do something like that to someone he respected (and there’s no way to get around that, Peter respects Neil’s intellegence, if not what he chooses to do with it) even on orders, as he’s already proven that he’s willing to go against orders to do what he thinks is right.
