2014 Golden Globes Predictions

The Golden Globes are this weekend, and that can only mean one thing, prediction time. These are my 2014 Golden Globes predictions, and I’m focusing on the TV categories only because well, that’s what we do here.

This was a great year for TV, so fortunately there’s a lot to choose from. I’m going to run through the categories with my thoughts, and you can see if you agree or disagree. Feel free to post your own predictions in the comments. Okay, here goes:

TV series, drama
“Breaking Bad”
“Downton Abbey”
“The Good Wife”
“House of Cards”
“Masters of Sex”

The Golden Globes aren’t exactly the most relevant awards, but they would have to be insane to pass over Breaking Bad for Best Drama this year. All of these are quality shows, and it’s great to see a pair of newcomers on the list, but Breaking Bad has this locked down.

TV Series, Comedy
“The Big Bang Theory”
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”
“Modern Family”
“Parks and Recreation”

Again, very cool to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine on here, but I don’t think it can compete with titans like Big Bang and Modern Family. I predict either a Girls or Big Bang win. Modern Family is mayyybe starting to be on the decline.

TV movie or mini-series
“American Horror Story: Coven”
“Behind the Candelabra”
“Dancing on the Edge”
“Top of the Lake”
“The White Queen”

I really wish they’d stop considering American Horror Story a miniseries in awards like this. It’s a series, it just revamps the setting and plot every year. I hope Top of the Lake wins, but Behind the Candelabra would be worthy as well.

Actress in a TV series, drama
Julianna Margulies – “The Good Wife”
Tatiana Maslany – “Orphan Black”
Taylor Schilling – “Orange is the New Black”
Kerry Washington – “Scandal”
Robin Wright – “House of Cards”

I suppose its too much to hope for that just because someone finally recognized Tatiana Maslany for her amazing work on Orphan Black last year, that she would actually go on to WIN the award. Julianna Marguiles or Kerry Washington will probably win, but Taylor Schilling would be a nice surprise. Robin Wright is in NO way a lead actress in House of Cards, and should not be in this category, movie star or not.

Actor in a TV series, drama
Bryan Cranston – “Breaking Bad”
Liev Schreiber – “Ray Donovan”
Kevin Spacey – “House of Cards”
James Spader – “The Blacklist”
Michael Sheen – “Masters of Sex”

This is a joke, right? I’ll bet fifty million dollars on Cranston or the Golden Globes should just end here and now.

Actress in a TV Series, Comedy
Zooey Deschanel – “New Girl”
Lena Dunham – “Girls”
Edie Falco – “Nurse Jackie”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus – “Veep”
Amy Poehler – “Parks and Recreation”

This is a little trickier. I honestly forgot Nurse Jackie was still on, but honestly Julia Louis-Dreyfus should take it for Veep. I love Poehler and Deschanel though. Dunham is great on Girls, but the show works as an ensemble, and I’m not sure if her performance is all that stand-out, controversy aside.

Actor, TV Series Comedy
Jason Bateman – “Arrested Development”
Don Cheadle – “House of Lies”
Michael J. Fox – “The Michael J. Fox Show”
Jim Parsons – “The Big Bang Theory”
Andy Samberg – “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

Love to see Arrested Development nominated here, though surprised its Bateman. Michael J. Fox may win despite the quality of his show, or Jim Parsons could take it. I love Andy Samberg, but he’s like the fifth funniest person on his own show.

Actress in a mini-series or TV movie
Helena Bonham Carter – “Burton and Taylor”
Rebecca Ferguson – “White Queen”
Jessica Lange – “American Horror Story: Coven”
Helen Mirren – “Phil Spector”
Elisabeth Moss – “Top of the Lake”

Now we’re starting to get into things I haven’t seen, unfortunately. I did love Top of the Lake and Elizabeth Moss was great in it. Jessica Lange should win for Coven, even if it’s not a damn miniseries.

Actor in a mini-series or TV movie
Matt Damon – “Behind the Candelabra”
Michael Douglas – “Behind the Candelabra”
Chiwetel Ejiofor – “Dancing on the Edge”
Idris Elba – “Luther”
Al Pacino – “Phil Spector”

Again, Luther is not a freaking mini-series, just because it’s on the BBC and has short seasons. Michael Douglas should win for Candelabra without question.

Supporting actress in a series, mini-series, or TV movie
Jacqueline Bisset – “Dancing on the Edge”
Janet McTeer – “White Queen”
Hayden Panettiere – “Nashville”
Monica Potter – “Parenthood”
Sofia Vergara – “Modern Family”

Alright, I almost just lost it because I thought they were trying to tell me Modern Family and Nashville were also “mini-series,” but I see they’ve combined everything into one category for supporting actor and actress, which is dumb. Vergara should win because I want to see her dress and hear her speech. But honestly, I think she deserves it.

Supporting actor in a series, mini-series or TV movie
Josh Charles – “The Good Wife”
Rob Lowe – “Behind the Candelabra”
Aaron Paul – “Breaking Bad”
Corey Stoll – “House of Cards”
Jon Voight – “Ray Donovan”

Just because he’s Jon Voight, that doesn’t mean any part of Ray Donovan deserves to be nominated for anything. Aaron Paul seems like the obvious choice, but Corey Stoll did a HELL of a job in House of Cards. This is the problem with combining these categories .While Rob Lowe was great in his Candelabra cameo, how can you compare his five total minutes of screen time to Aaron Paul’s work over an entire season of Breaking Bad? Idiocy.
