Aaron Sorkin Scripted “Lucy and Desi” Looking Promising

Lucille Ball and Desi Anaz were the hottest couple in show business during their heyday. They were both talented comedians who delivered high on the laughs and the drama in their years together on “I Love Lucy.” Aaron Sorkin is scripting a new drama about the famous couple, who have long since passed away, but their legacy continues. From what we can tell, the script looks promising and it will certainly spark a sense of nostalgia for the generations who tuned in to enjoy the laughs from Lucille and the amazing big band music of her Cuban sensation husband Desi.

Here is what we know about it so far.

Amazon Studios acquisition

Escape Artists has struck a deal in which Amazon has acquired “Lucy and Desi.”Lucille, known as a pioneer for women comedians, has a story that is worth knowing about. If you’re a part of the younger generation, you may have heard her name, but probably are not familiar with just how important she was to the women in the entertainment industry. The project has been on the back burner for a few years, and the pace for making it a reality has just been thrust into high gear.

The project is being produced by Steve Tisch, Jason Blumenthal and Todd Black, all Escape Artists. Cate Blanchett will star in the lead role as Lucy. The creation is still in its infancy and the search is ongoing for the part of Desi Arnaz. There have been a few rumors that possibly Javier Bardem is being considered for the role. In the meantime, they will also be looking for actors to play the important parts of the couples’ best friends Fred and Ethel Mertz, formerly played by William Frawley and Vivian Vance.

Input into the development

We learned that the producers are getting some very important technical advice from Lucie Luckinbill and Desi Arnaz Jr. They are the children of the couple and they are taking an active role by authorizing the re-telling of the complicated relationship that their parents had in real life. If was combination of business and romance. It was well known that Lucy and Desi had their share of ups and downs. Together they form the Desilu production company which was also responsible for bringing the world the “Star Trek” series and others. Since the death of their parents, Lucie and Desi Jr have retained all rights to their parents memoirs which were personally penned by Aranz and Ball. There is no doubt that the writings will contain some very interesting information about the personal lives of the famous couple. It will give the world a glimpse of what it was like to gain fame during the early era of the sitcom genre.

An ongoing effort

We’ll learn more as the project begins to take shape. It is currently moving past the concept stage and is being pulled together as the cast is starting to resemble something workable. As more positions are filled and filming starts, we’ll learn more as we go. There has been no estimate of when the project will complete or be released, but it’s enough to know that the process is firmly underway and it’s going to be a definite go.
