Danny Wallace is a funny guy. You probably don’t recognize the name, but you’ll probably know some of his work.
Still drawing a blank? Well, Wallace’s book Yes Man served as the inspiration for last year’s Jim Carrey flick of the same name. As it turns out, Yes Man was a memoir — Wallace actually said ‘yes’ to everything for a year, causing all sorts of misadventures, and actually had a positive influence on Wallace’s life.
Now, Wallace is coming to ABC. A pilot order for Wallace’s new ‘hybrid comedy,’ Awkward Situations for Men, has been handed out by the network. The script, which is co-penned by Jeff and Jackie Filgo (That 70’s Show) along with Wallace, revolves around Wallace and his wife crossing over the Atlantic from Britain. However, once here, Wallace realizes that his behavior is not consistent with American behavior, causing himself great embarassment and humorous situations. Basically, if you take the ‘real person’ feel of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and throw in the culture shock of Flight of the Conchords, you’ll have Awkward Situations for Men.
The title is a mouthful, but ABC is banking on it, especially considering the great success that sitcoms have had this season for the network. Their freshman Modern Family is one of the network’s biggest hits, while the zany Better Off Ted is one of their most critically acclaimed.
Awkward Situations for Men is likely to premiere in the fall of next year.
